Job description

The Shift Leader oversees all operations leading/directing railcar production for the Red Deer second shift (Monday - Friday 3:10 PM - 11:30 PM). This role is accountable for leadership of skilled labor employees, including safety, quality, production, and cost. Ensuring the highest quality work efficiently and cost-effectively is essential.

The Shift Leader must understand the importance of quick turnaround times and quality repairs to our customers. They set an example and conduct activities consistent with GATX Policies and Procedures, fostering a positive, inclusive environment for communication and continuous improvement.

Key Job Activities:
  1. Plan, organize, and supervise shift production to meet priority goals and resource availability, ensuring timely repairs. Provide leadership and management for daily operations across departments, ensuring proper processing and maintenance of railcars. Perform in-process quality audits and operate within the service center's budget. Ensure safety compliance and adherence to GATX policies.
  2. Utilize technical experience and problem-solving skills to maintain quality repairs. Maintain an effective workforce through training, counseling, and motivation. Assign tasks and oversee groups of employees. Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and all relevant industry and government regulations. Complete and verify all paperwork and IT documentation. Train and mentor supervisors.
  3. Communicate work area status and activities to the Production Manager. Coordinate with other work areas to ensure smooth car flow. Manage shift transitions and pass-downs.
  4. Complete all administrative tasks accurately and timely.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in business management, industrial technology, engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.
  • Knowledge of AAR and FRA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to lead a versatile team and communicate effectively in English.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, MMS, Shop Portal, ECM, MIS, SEM, SharePoint, SAP, Hippo, Citrix, GagePack, Power BI, Lotus Notes, Customer and Gasket Spec Databases, eMaint, and Labor Collection systems.
Other Requirements:
  • Physical ability to supervise car repair activities across departments.
  • Some travel (less than 5%) within Canada and the U.S.
