Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Under the direction of the Manager or designate and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope, performs assessments, plans and provides personal care, and carries out nursing procedures. The LPN operates within the competency guidelines and full scope of practice as outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, adhering to agency policies, standards, and unit protocols.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN.
  • Perinatal positions require either: (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus breastfeeding course; or (b) one year of recent acute perinatal experience (within the last 2 years). Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within the past 2 years is also required.
  • MHSU positions require additional education as outlined by BCCNM for practice involving Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.
  • Hip and Knee Clinic positions require two years of recent, related surgical and preadmission clinic experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication with residents, families, co-workers, the multidisciplinary team, and the public.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Organize work and implement a care plan.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice, including medication administration.
  • Operate related equipment.
  • Physically carry out the duties of the position.
