Job description

BA Blacktop Ltd. is currently seeking a team-oriented, self-motivated, and dedicated individual to join our Operations Team as a Grade Foreperson.

Job Purpose

The Grade Foreperson is the first in command under the supervision of the Superintendent and oversees the execution of work on the job site, which may include projects in Sechelt, Powell River, or other locations within the Sunshine Coast area, depending on the project year.

Key Tasks And Responsibilities

Job Site Operation
  • Ensure work order and all necessary information are provided prior to commencing work.
  • Review work orders and fully understand the scope of work and timelines.
  • Review project requirements (quantities, cost codes, production rate, drawings, etc.) with the Superintendent.
  • Perform or verify project survey/layout as necessary.
  • Monitor material quantities and production rates continuously.
  • Construct curb & gutter, sidewalk, CB / MH installation/adjustment, grading operations, cut/fill slopes, excavations, retaining walls, etc.
  • Reinforce the disciplinary program.
  • Oversee and review work to minimize costs and optimize efficiency.
Coordinate/Schedule Onsite Work
  • Inform all workers on site of the schedule.
  • Lead, organize, and give specific instructions to the crew daily, as tasks may vary.
  • Organize necessary resources such as trucks, equipment, materials, and sub-contractors.
  • Supervise all aspects of daily and weekly operations.
  • Monitor work progress and ensure deadlines are met.
Quality of Work
  • Ensure quality requirements are met.
  • Address and correct deficiencies early, communicating with the Superintendent.
  • Report deficiencies through the NCR process.
Training and Development
  • Monitor, train, and develop crew members.
  • Ensure new/young workers are trained prior to completing the New Worker Program.
Equipment Management
  • Provide necessary materials/equipment for daily maintenance.
  • Ensure operators perform daily maintenance and checks.
  • Report equipment issues and breakdowns.
Reporting and Record Keeping
  • Complete daily quantity reports and extra work orders.
  • Prepare and submit accurate timesheets daily.
  • Keep detailed notes of activities and issues.
Site Safety
  • Maintain safety and liability awareness.
  • Lead daily work plans and conduct safety inspections.
  • Ensure PPE is worn and safety procedures are followed.
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of utilities/construction activities and processes.
  • Knowledge of specifications (MoTI, MMCD, local government).
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans and blueprints.
  • Organizational skills for field activities.
  • Computer skills.
  • Ability to measure and calculate various quantities.
  • Experience with project layout and elevation calculations.
  • Knowledge of site equipment.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Client and public communication skills.
  • Desire to learn and teach, with a passion for excellence.
  • Certifications: WHMIS, First Aid Level 1, Traffic Control, Confined Space, Papyrus, Intelex.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Site plan reading, survey, and public works courses (BCIT).
  • Construction management courses.
  • Advanced First Aid, Fall Protection, Hoisting & Rigging, Heavy Duty Trailer Endorsement.
Additional Comments

The role requires flexibility, overseeing small to medium road/parking projects in Sechelt, Powell River, and other Sunshine Coast locations, with frequent travel between sites.

Pay: From $45.50 per hour
