School District 72 operates throughout a large geographic area. Campbell River and Quadra Island schools and our school board office are located on the traditional territory of the Liǧʷiɫdaxʷ people. School District 72 is looking for a temporary .4 FTE Learning Support teacher to join our team of educators at Cortes School who strive to bring the district's learning beliefs to life.

Cortes School is a small rural school located on Cortes Islandbout Cortes Island), nestled amongst the spectacular Discovery Islands, at the entrance to Desolation Sound “amidst breathtaking fjords that penetrate the wild west coast of mainland British Columbia”. The island is accessible by ferry, water taxi, or float plane. The school serves the families living on the Island and offers education to students from Kindergarten to Grade 9. Residents of the area enjoy the many recreational activities available on their doorstep; these include sailing, hiking, biking, camping, and fishing (fin fish, shellfish, and crustaceans). Cortes Island is also home to a thriving agricultural and artisanal community. Please note, it is not possible to commute between Campbell River and Cortes Island on a daily basis.

School District 72 (Campbell River) is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, extending north to Sayward and south to Oyster River. The district also includes the outer islands of Read, Cortes, and Quadra. The district serves over 5,600 students in 18 schools with a diverse range of programs that are progressive and responsive to the educational needs and interests of students.

We are looking for teachers who have an understanding and commitment to teaching practices that embodies :

The successful candidate for this position must have :

• A Diploma or Degree in Special Education, with coursework in the following areas : Reading Disabilities, Math Remediation, Exceptional Children, Behavior Interventions, and Assessment and Evaluation with training to use Level B assessment tools.
• At least two years of successful classroom teaching experience at the appropriate level.
• Extensive knowledge and practice in modification and adaptation strategies for various levels of student performance and in designing remediation techniques for students with learning difficulties.
• Demonstrated skills in time management and record keeping; interpersonal, verbal, and written communication; conflict resolution; and collaboration.
• Demonstrated philosophy that supports inclusion for students with special needs.
• Demonstrated ability to advocate for students with special needs and students with different learning styles.
• The ability to collaboratively develop, implement, and evaluate an IEP in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students, district personnel and community professionals.
• An understanding of computer technology, especially as it relates to students with special needs.
• Demonstrated leadership in working as a team member with students, staff, educational assistants, and parents.
• An understanding of assessment for learning and the ability to demonstrate its applications in designing differentiated instructional strategies for use in classrooms and other learning situations.
• The ability to demonstrate how current practices align with SD72 learning beliefs.

The starting full-time salary for these teaching positions range from $60,015 and $109,520. Placement on a salary scale is subject to verification of experience and certification and will be done in accordance with the current collective agreement.
