Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety are priorities and shared responsibilities. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Team Lead provides leadership in daily operations, aligning with the Vision and Mission of Island Health. They participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating services that reflect the Mental Health and Substance Use vision, including a harm reduction philosophy.

The Team Lead acts as a communication liaison between multidisciplinary team members, emergency health services, and community organizations, fostering cross-service relationships to ensure effective client transitions. They demonstrate a harm reduction approach, providing assessment, brief interventions, treatment, rehabilitation/recovery, outreach, and service navigation in line with provincial standards and guidelines.

Leadership responsibilities include guiding the multidisciplinary team, serving as a role model and coach for staff professional development, and contributing to the achievement of unit/service goals. The role involves strategic planning, policy development, quality and risk management, and community program development when appropriate. Travel may be required, with transportation arrangements meeting operational needs, potentially including the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Graduation from a recognized nursing program or related health discipline, Advanced Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing, or a Diploma with CNA certification, or equivalent experience.
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or RPN.
  • Minimum three years of recent related experience in MHSU clinical services and at least one year of leadership experience, or equivalent.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of theories, technologies, legislation, and practices in Intensive Case Management, mental health, and the criminal justice system.
  • Understanding of care issues for individuals with serious addictions, mental illness, aggressive behaviors, and homelessness.
  • Practical experience in harm reduction practices.
  • Knowledge of program management, leadership, and collaborative practice principles.
  • Experience with community service systems, especially in South Island, and multi-organizational service delivery.
  • Understanding of adult education principles and functional rehabilitation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team and independently in challenging environments.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize workload and evaluate care.
  • Ability to assess learning needs and teach using adult education principles.
  • Proficiency in managing internal and external contacts, including co-workers, physicians, community agencies, patients, and families.
