Location : This position is hybrid-remote; travel within the Province of Nova Scotia is required as needed.
This role will support two innovative programs: the CAPABLE program and the Employee Support Program.
The Community Aging in Place, Advancing Better Living for Elders (CAPABLE) program aims to enhance the functional mobility, independence, and safety of economically disadvantaged adults aged 65 and above who remain independent and in their own homes.
Our Employee Support Program provides workplace safety training to nurses, CCAs, and other care workers who deliver home care services. This innovative program involves collaboration between occupational therapists, home care organizations, their occupational health and safety teams, and employees to assess needs, address concerns, and develop recommendations to prevent injuries and ensure smooth return-to-work transitions.
Key Responsibilities :
- Directs and monitors delivery of client care services and day-to-day functions and performance of front-line staff in accordance with current regulatory guidelines and VON policies, procedures, and standards.
- Assists staff to complete risk assessments, investigations of issues, injuries, and reporting related to client or employee incidents.
- Monitors performance related to funder expectations and contributes to quality improvement activities to achieve performance targets.
- Guides new employees through orientation, ensuring all probationary reviews and retention interviews are completed.
- Applies knowledge of relevant collective agreements and local labour rules in decision-making.
- Participates in budget preparation, financial management, and reporting.
- Participates in local, regional, or national committees as required.
- Develops team procedures and guidelines in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
- Builds and sustains strategic relationships with partners and community organizations.
- Handles and documents complaints or issues related to service delivery, engaging other managers as needed.
- Ensures occupational health and safety policies and activities are followed, in compliance with regulations.
- Assesses community needs and assists in developing proposals to meet emerging opportunities.
- Provides support for department presentations and reports.
- Completes relevant reports and analyses for stakeholders.
- Facilitates staff development and growth through team approaches, mentorship, and competency assessments.
- Provides clinical advice and support to service providers.
- Assists with delivery of in-home care services as required.
- Promotes VON’s strategy and role as a community care provider.
- Prioritizes opportunities aligning with VON’s strategic plan.
- Provides leadership in navigating unionized and non-unionized environments.
- Coaches, motivates, and leads staff, fostering a positive workplace.
- Promotes LEAN management practices.
- Ensures mechanisms for staff communication and feedback.
- Completes performance and learning plans for staff.
- Promotes organizational goals through orientation, recognition, and support.
- Leads client and family engagement efforts in line with Accreditation Canada Standards.
- Ensures a safe and healthy workplace, complying with health and safety laws and policies.
- Supports safety management systems and safe work practices.
- Fosters work/life balance and professional development.
- Encourages the use of technology for knowledge management.
External and Internal Relationships :
- Communicates proactively with home care and management teams.
- Builds effective relationships across departments.
- Interacts with health authorities, ministries, and community agencies.
Education, Designations and Experience :
- Post-secondary degree from an accredited Occupational Therapist Program.
- Certified and Regulated Occupational Therapist.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in the relevant functional area.
- At least 2 years’ experience managing others (preferred).
- Experience in community work and partnerships.
- Experience engaging with municipal, provincial, and national groups.
- Skills in negotiation, conflict management, and financial management.
- Experience in unionized environments is an asset.

Working conditions and physical demands : This role requires attention to detail in a dynamic environment, involving physical activities such as lifting, bending, reaching, and walking, with good body mechanics.
