Job description

Overview

The Lab Phlebotomist - Ambulatory performs venipuncture, skin puncture, EKG, point of care testing, and registration in the ambulatory setting. Demonstrates excellent communication and patient care skills.

Qualifications

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA). Education: H.S. Diploma/GED. Work Experience: 6 months phlebotomy work experience or completion of Carle Phlebotomy in Training Program.

Responsibilities
  1. Performs routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
  2. Verifies patient identification and specimen labeling to ensure quality.
  3. Performs point-of-care testing, specimen processing, and EKGs in the ambulatory setting.
  4. Registers patients and enters lab orders into the lab computer system.
  5. Serves patients from newborn to geriatric across various labs, collecting blood specimens, providing collection instructions, and performing EKGs and point of care tests.
  6. Collects blood from approximately 50-200 patients daily, working every second or third Saturday at South Clinic Lab and covering 1-2 call shifts weekly.
  7. Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers: Name/Date of Birth or Name/Medical Record Number.
  8. Enters patient registration and insurance information in Epic Prelude, transcribes orders, and reviews orders with patients before release into the lab system.
  9. Performs blood draws using various needles and kits, including complex procedures with specialized kits and blood cultures requiring chloroprep decontamination.
  10. Performs point of care tests such as iStat, Diastix, and Quicktox, troubleshooting as needed.
  11. Processes specimens according to test requirements, managing storage and handling appropriately.
  12. Performs 12-lead EKGs using GE MAC 5500 HD.
  13. Participates in accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual competencies, completing re-education as needed.
  14. Follows policies and maintains documentation, completing continuing education to maintain certification.
  15. Communicates effectively with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
  16. Works efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation and Benefits
