The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) practices a culturally responsive pedagogy approach to provide an inclusive, diverse, equitable, safe, and healthy education that supports personal and academic success for the 59,000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties. This area covers 5,250 square kilometres and includes 23 schools.

Title: Academic Support for Adults and Alternative Students - 20% Alternative and 80% Adult (Subjects include Global Sustainability Studies 12, MKS 11 or CCS 11, PAL 11, PE 11 and 12 as required, Business Technology 11, Design 11, Oceans 11, Co-op 12)

Responsibilities include providing classroom instruction and supervision to students in an alternative education setting, reinforcing instruction to individuals and small groups across various academic subjects, implementing personal education and behavior plans, utilizing behavioral strategies and alternative programs, working with outside agencies and support staff, attending meetings, and maintaining records in PowerSchool. Experience in Math and Science is an asset.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification
  • Bachelor of Education - Secondary
  • University education in Science

OR a minimum of three years of experience teaching at least 50% Science within the last seven years with positive performance appraisals and/or references.

  • University education in Kinesiology

OR a minimum of three years of experience teaching at least 50% Phys Ed within the last seven years with positive performance appraisals and/or references.

  • Experience teaching Adult & Alternative Education, with familiarity in high school courses, credit programs, graduation requirements, and creating culturally responsive, inclusive, safe learning environments
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral, electronic)
  • Ability to collaborate with school and inter-agency teams for early intervention, service coordination, and program planning
  • Proven teamwork in school program planning and multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Current understanding of developmental trauma and its impact on learning and social engagement
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies based on student needs
  • Ability to employ non-violent crisis intervention techniques
  • Effective teaching strategies and coaching skills for school staff
  • Maintain confidentiality as a norm
  • Experience in planning and developing training related to students with behaviors of concern
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse cultural and racial backgrounds
  • Valuing others’ voices and contributions, open to constructive criticism
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid or willingness to obtain upon hire
