Job description

Mental Health Worker - COAST Hamilton MCRRT (new)

POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary responsibility of the COAST Mental Health Worker will be to respond to community members of all ages who are seriously mentally ill and in crisis. This includes mobile response and telephone crisis calls. The Mental Health Worker collaborates with the COAST team, including police officers in the Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team (MCRRT). The role involves systemic assessment of adults, children, and youth in crisis to stabilize and manage situations. The worker conducts risk and safety assessments, provides support, and connects individuals and families to community resources as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Degree/Diploma in Nursing (RN), Social Work (BSW or MSW), Occupational Therapy, or current registration with relevant health college (e.g., College of Nurses, College of Psychotherapists, etc.)
  • 2-5 years community/crisis experience, preferably with children and youth; 5+ years clinical mental health experience preferred
  • Experience in crisis intervention, risk assessments, suicide prevention, and crisis theory
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, psychiatric diagnosis, psychotropic medications, and mental health assessments
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, police, court, inpatient and outpatient systems
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • French language skills are an asset
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification
  • Proficiency with computer data entry
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and community engagement

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answering crisis line calls and initial triage
  • Providing crisis intervention and developing working formulations
  • Offering follow-up support and connecting clients to services
  • Developing safety plans to protect clients and others
  • Completing mental health assessments
  • Contracting with clients and families for further services, including mobile crisis response
  • Assessing risks in outreach environments
  • Reducing conflicts between clients and caregivers
  • Performing mental status examinations and direct observations
  • Educating the community about mobile crisis services
  • Building partnerships with hospitals, law enforcement, and social services
  • Partnering with police in mobile crisis interventions
  • Maintaining knowledge of resources and participating in ongoing professional development
  • Contributing to goals around prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental illness
  • Adhering to policies of COAST and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton
