Qualifications

Job Summary:

Personal Support Workers will be responsible for providing companionship, personal care, and health maintenance services to clients in their home or throughout the community within the framework of VON’s philosophy, policies, standards, and legislation. As a Personal Support Worker, you will work with members of the Healthcare and Personal Support teams to meet the needs of clients in obtaining an optimal level of independence and well-being.

This position is eligible for the $3.00 per hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours spent directly caring for clients.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Observes and evaluates the client’s or family's home, personal situation, and care plan to determine if any changes are required and whether the client’s and family’s needs have been met. Advises supervisor accordingly.
  2. Contributes to the development of the personal support care plan under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
  3. Implements changes to the care plan under the guidance of the Manager for safety, liability, and financial reasons.
  4. Reports any changes in the client’s or family's personal support needs or home situation to the supervisor.
  5. Performs personal support tasks reflecting the needs of the client and family.
  6. Provides personal care as directed by the Personal Support Program Manager or immediate supervisor.
  7. Provides simple bedside care, where required, under the direction of a nurse.
  8. Provides respite care to clients as required.
  9. Supports clients’ families by providing childcare as required.
  10. Organizes daily activities, setting priorities for personal support.
  11. Completes daily call checks and other forms as required.
  12. Assesses the client's pattern of communication and ability to relate.
  13. Communicates with appropriate members of the health team regarding the management of the client's or family's needs.
  14. Functions and reports in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and VON policies.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

External and Internal Relationships:
  1. Engages frequently with the immediate supervisor or the Personal Support Program Manager on any needed changes to client plans.

Education, Designations, and Experience:
  1. Must have a certificate in Personal Support Worker certification or Developmental Services Worker diploma.
  2. Home Support Worker (Level II, III) or Health Care Aide.
  3. Must have a current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate.
  4. Some household management experience and experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.

Skill Requirements:
  1. Strong communication skills, both verbally and written.
  2. Able to communicate effectively with clients and families.
  3. Good assessment skills.
  4. Awareness of community resources.
  5. Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently.
  6. Able to take direction well.
  7. Ability to adjust to working in different environments.
  8. The capacity to adhere to strict confidentiality.

Other:
  1. Must have access to a personal vehicle for work and possess both a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance.
  2. A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
  3. A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or a Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  4. Available to work flexible hours.
