Current Shift: 8:40am- 2:40pm Monday to Friday

(Includes 1/2 hour unpaid lunch) 10 months per year while regular classes are in session

Pay Rate: $28.47

POSITION

Education Assistant

Summary

Under the direction of a teacher or School Administrator, provides support to students with social, emotional, physical, and academic needs.

DUTIES
  1. Implements Individual Education Plans (IEPs) by assisting the team with planning, researching, adapting, and collecting materials.
  2. Provides direct educational classroom support to students in various classrooms.
  3. Participates as a member of the School-Based Team to plan for, implement, and evaluate the social, emotional, physical, and academic needs of students.
  4. Collects student learning and behavioral data (e.g., records, reports, plans, including functional assessment data).
  5. Assists students during dysregulation using non-violent crisis intervention strategies.
  6. Monitors and supports students' behavior during daily arrival, class changes, dismissal, in lunchroom and playground, and on field trips and in various community settings.
  7. Assists school and district staff in evaluating students for social, emotional, physical, and academic progress.
  8. Observes, monitors, and documents health, behavioral, and academic changes or progress of students.
  9. Assists students in carrying out programs set out by District Staff (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, Psychologist).
  10. Uses computers and specialized equipment to provide support and instruction.
  11. Provides augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to students using specialized equipment and resources (e.g., computers, F.M., switches, communication boards, basic sign language, oral interpretive skills); troubleshoots and programs such equipment.
  12. Provides information to staff regarding student-specific program needs (e.g., safety, health, academic, emotional, and social needs).
  13. Dispenses medications and carries out procedures as outlined in health care plans or Medication Administration Forms.
  14. Acts as an advocate for students and assists with communication.
  15. Advises supervisor of any unusual student comments or behavior patterns.
  16. Supports students in developing self-esteem, personal skills, hobbies, and interests.
  17. Provides life skills training (e.g., hygiene, cooking, shopping, banking, working).
  18. Provides support with mobility, lifts, transfers, and personal care (e.g., toileting, menses, clothing, catheterization, oral and tube feeds, diapers).
  19. Assists with behavior support (e.g., clarify expected behavior, support self-regulation, develop social skills).
  20. Supports students during dysregulation using non-physical crisis intervention strategies.
  21. Monitors student work and assists with work completion.
  22. Monitors class/students when teachers are out briefly.
  23. Transports and supports students during community activities.
  24. Ensures safe arrival, departure, and emergency evacuation procedures.
  25. Provides preventative and emergency care as outlined in health plans (e.g., seizures, choking).
  26. Prepares materials for meetings with parents and staff and participates in meetings.
  27. Follows District policies on privacy and confidentiality.

* Performs other duties within the knowledge and skills required by the job.

Qualifications
  • Grade 12
  • Education Assistant and Community Support Worker Certificate, or equivalent
  • One year of related experience in a supervised work environment
  • Relevant specialized skills (e.g., POPARD Intro to ASD, Behavior Support, Non-Violent Intervention, Basic Sign Language)
  • Level One First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver's License (if transportation of students is required)
  • Working knowledge of computer software and hardware
  • Demonstrated use of alternative communication strategies and effective behavior intervention
  • Or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
