Position Description

The Director of Accounting is a hands-on, operational role responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the organization's financial operations. This includes day-to-day accounting functions such as full-cycle accounting, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and cash flow management, as well as broader financial planning, budgeting, reporting, and compliance. The role ensures the effective and efficient use of resources in support of CAN’s mission and strategic objectives. In addition to financial oversight, the Director of Accounting provides guidance to the senior leadership team, supporting strategic decision-making while maintaining transparency and financial integrity. This position is integral to ensuring both the short-term financial health and long-term sustainability of the organization.

Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing programs for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, while promoting acceptance and inclusion through community engagement and training initiatives across BC. Our vision is for every Autistic individual to be understood, accepted, and supported in all community spaces.

We engage a workforce of over 200 volunteers and 450 frontline staff to deliver programs for children, youth, and adults on the spectrum in communities across British Columbia. Since its inception in 2008, CAN has directly impacted over 8,000 individuals on the autism spectrum.

Key Functions

  • Oversee all financial activities, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the senior leadership team, highlighting key financial results, trends, and forecasts.
  • Manage cash flow and general accounting functions to maintain adequate liquidity for operations.
  • Ensure timely submission of all required government filings, including charitable returns, GST rebates, and payroll filings.
  • Support and review bi-weekly payroll, payroll liabilities, and benefits, including PTO, extended group benefits, and RRSP plans.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Facilitate the annual budgeting process, working with department heads to develop budgets that support the organization's operational needs.
  • Monitor budget progress throughout the year, providing periodic reforecasts and making necessary adjustments.
  • Offer financial analysis to support decision-making related to funding, resource allocation, and program delivery.
  • Work with staff and management to resolve budget-related issues and ensure clear understanding of budget plans.
  • Manage the financial tracking and reporting of restricted funds to ensure alignment with donor restrictions and project requirements.
  • Prepare budgets and financial reports for foundation and government grant applications, managing grant accounting and reporting of project/program budgets and expenditures.
  • Collaborate with Development and Program teams to ensure proper tracking and reporting of grant expenditures.
  • Support the preparation of grant proposals and ensure accurate financial reporting to funders.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and ensure compliance with financial policies.
  • Support the ongoing evaluation and enhancement of policies, procedures, and internal controls to align with operational and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with CRA guidelines for charitable organizations, including annual filing and documentation requirements.
  • Coordinate and support the external audit process, liaising with auditors and preparing financial statements and schedules.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Supervise and support the accounting and payroll team, providing leadership, mentorship, and training as required.
  • Promote a collaborative, efficient, and supportive work environment.
  • Conduct performance reviews and assist with the development of team members.

Strategic Planning and Decision Support

  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team to provide financial analysis and advice for the development of the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Advise on financial implications for programmatic decisions, ensuring long-term financial sustainability while maintaining organizational mission and values.
  • Foster relationships with all members of the management team through demonstrated business judgment combined with an ability to effectively influence others.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or senior finance role.
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
  • Hands-on experience with payroll processing, benefits administration, and day-to-day accounting operations.
  • Proficiency with accounting and payroll software, preferably Sage Intacct and Payworks.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, financial forecasting, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Experience in nonprofit finance and accounting is strongly preferred, including knowledge of fund accounting, grant management, and compliance requirements.
