Child and Youth Care Practitioner (12 Month Position)

West Kings District High School

Starting Wages: $28.20 per hour

Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU) Local 73 Bargaining Unit at avrce.ca.

The Child and Youth Care Worker, under the direction of the Coordinator of Equity and School Support, works with assigned students in schools. The role involves collaborating with school teams to design and implement proactive, evidence-based programming for students facing social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Responsibilities include:

  1. Working directly with complex students in grades 6-12 within educational settings, identifying services for students who struggle to cope academically and socially.
  2. Supporting effective communication and connections between schools, families, and community agencies to meet student needs.
  3. Collaborating with families, administrators, teachers, educational assistants, community agencies, and support services.
  4. Helping students develop social skills and self-regulation through community-based, recreational, summer, and after-school programs.
  5. Assisting in the reintegration of students into the school environment after suspensions, including participating in return-to-school meetings.
  6. Serving as a designated safe contact, providing "check and connect" sessions to support students transitioning back into school.
  7. Offering restorative opportunities within schools and communities to repair relationships and promote accountability.

REQUIREMENTS :

Applicants must have completed a two-year Child and Youth Care Practitioner program or a related field. Educational qualifications must be confirmed and included with the application. Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience working with children and youth in educational settings.
  • Membership in the Nova Scotia Child and Youth Care Workers’ Association (asset).

Additional skills and abilities include:

  • Ability to establish proactive relationships and provide appropriate supports for vulnerable children and youth impacted by developmental trauma, behavioral, social, emotional, and mental health challenges.
  • Applying evidence-informed supports and interventions related to social-emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Collaborative programming to support academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success.
  • Effective mediation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Flexibility to work in various settings, including home visits, community outings, and work sites, supporting student success.
  • Utilizing current technologies to support students with self-regulation and communication challenges.
  • Effective communication with students and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Collaborative work with educators, administrators, specialists, and others to implement interventions and programming.
  • Valid driver’s license, current First Aid and CPR, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification.
