This area covers 5,250 square kilometres and includes 23 schools.

Position Type: 100% Term

Description:

The Learning Support Teacher (LST) is responsible for teaching and supporting students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by collaborating with school staff and families to develop individualized programs that maximize learning experiences for students.

Qualifications, Experience, and Training:

  • Valid Nova Scotia teaching license
  • Secondary Endorsement
  • Masters in Inclusive Education and/or Special Education or a Masters in Curriculum with a focus on UDL and Inclusive Education from Acadia University
  • Completion of the Program for Aspiring Learning Support Teachers (PANLST)
  • Minimum of 5 years of classroom teaching experience, including programming for students with diverse needs at the elementary level
  • Recent training and experience in evidence-based programming and interventions for students with diverse needs
  • Additional training in TEACCH, STAR, Social Narratives, Social Thinking, Zones of Regulation, Interoception, and APSEA AIE ASD Online Course: ASD and Behavioral Interventions, Trauma-Informed Practices, and Assistive Technology
  • Understanding of the MTSS Framework and support for the Tiers of Intervention, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP)
  • Proven ability to collaborate in Student Planning Teams and Teaching Support Teams
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding records and documentation

Characteristics:

  • Ability to provide program direction and assist teachers in developing outcomes for students with diverse needs
  • Effective communication with students, teachers, parents, community members, and outside agencies

Task Dimensions:

  • Collaborate to develop and support Individual Program Plans, Support Plans, and teaching strategies based on individual student needs
  • Provide direct instruction aligned with student Program Plans in collaboration with classroom teachers
  • Participate in Teaching Support and Student Planning Teams for problem-solving and program planning
  • Assist students with Assistive Technology and AAC systems
  • Support planning for student transitions, including employment, school-to-work, and independent living
  • Support Universal Design for Learning within an MTSS framework
  • Collaborate on assessment and reporting practices
  • Implement evidence-based strategies and interventions across Tiers 1, 2, and 3
  • Model teaching strategies and support teachers/TAs as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality of records (TIENET)
  • Engage in ongoing professional development in Inclusive Education and related areas
  • Comply with Occupational Health & Safety regulations
  • Understand provincial and regional policies, guidelines, and the rights and responsibilities related to individuals with special needs
  • Perform other related duties as required
