Job description

Position Summary


Seabird Island is committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and resilient community. We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values First Nations knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Resilience and Prevention Coordinator to oversee the implementation, documentation, and reporting of programs that enhance community resilience and prevention efforts related to sexual violence.



The Resilience and Prevention Coordinator will work closely with the Resilience and Prevention Specialist, who will be the primary provider of direct support to survivors. The Coordinator will focus on program coordination, funding development, documentation, and partnership building. Additionally, they will ensure that services align with trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive practices while supporting the Specialist in delivering effective interventions.



This is a one-year Full-Time Term Contract with an end date of April 07, 2026, with the possibility of extension.



What You'll Do


Program Coordination & Development



  • Oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of resilience and prevention programs.

  • Ensure the Resilience and Prevention Specialist has the necessary resources and support to provide direct survivor assistance.

  • In collaboration with management and local emergency services, develop emergency response protocols.

  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants and partnerships, to sustain and expand programming.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, Elders, youth, and externalpartners.


Documentation & Reporting



  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of program activities, survivor support efforts, and community engagement initiatives.

  • Oversee reporting requirements for management, funding agencies, and external partners.

  • Ensure compliance with all funding and regulatory reporting standards.

  • Develop and implement data collection methods to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.


Training & Community Engagement



  • Organize and facilitate community forums, talking circles, and awareness events to promote healing, prevention, and resilience.

  • Develop and deliver culturally appropriate education and training on topics such as consent, healthy relationships, traditional teachings, and community safety.

  • Collaborate with community leaders, Elders, and stakeholders to integrate traditional knowledge and values into prevention initiatives.

  • Attend local meetings to discuss approaches to prevention and survivor support.


Support & Collaboration with Specialist



  • Provide occasional direct support to survivors when needed, ensuring a trauma-informed and culturally safe approach.

  • Work closely with the Resilience and Prevention Specialist to ensure timely and coordinated survivor support services.

  • Assist the Specialist with system navigation, referrals, and access to external services such as medical, legal, and counseling resources.

  • Maintain a survivor-centered approach, respecting autonomy and choice in all interactions.


Other Duties



  • Act as back-up to the Resilience and Prevention Specialist.

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.


Working / Special Conditions



  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.

  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.

  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage with and support families in our community and the communities we serve.

  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and community needs. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.



What You Bring


Qualifications:



  • Diploma or Degree in social sciences, advocacy, community development, social work, or a related field. We also recognize and value cultural knowledge and experience gained through other forms of education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers.

  • At least years of relevant experience working within Indigenous communities, focusing on prevention.

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures,traditions, and contemporary issues.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.


Preferred:



  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.

  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.



Cultural Competency:



  • Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.

  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.

  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
