Job description

Job Description: Speech Language Pathologist

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA), patient safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, and within the context of assigned team(s) with a family-centred philosophy, the Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of children's communication disorders to promote their social, physical, and psychological well-being. Clinical guidance and instruction are available from the Senior Speech Language Pathologist.

Travel may be required for this position. Transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements and may involve the use of a personal vehicle, with a valid BC Driver's License.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Current licensure in a practicing category with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC as a Speech Language Practitioner.
  • Master's degree from an accredited school of Speech Pathology and Audiology.
  • At least two years of experience working with children who have multiple disabilities and communication disorders.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to independently organize and plan treatment programs, set priorities, and collaborate with parents and other professionals.
  • Ability to train and monitor others in delivering SLP programs.
  • Perceptiveness to the needs of children and families, with tact, patience, and optimism.
  • Effective communication skills in written and oral English.
  • Ability to interact effectively with children with disabilities, families, colleagues, and the public.
  • Use of initiative and sound professional judgment.
  • Knowledge of group processes and facilitation techniques.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform duties.
  • Functional use of alternative communication modes is an asset.
