Main Purpose and Function

The Lead Park Ranger is committed to community engagement and enhancing the park experience across over 200 parks, including green spaces, sports facilities, play areas, pathways, beaches, and nature preserves. The role involves leading a team of Park Rangers in daily operations, including briefings, field support, administrative tasks, supervising staff, planning, training, stakeholder engagement, incident investigations, and participating in planning activities. The Lead Park Ranger also advises park users, enforces regulations, and serves as an escalation point for issues.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor Park Rangers in daily operations.
  • Assist in developing schedules, operational plans, and training materials.
  • Monitor call lines, revise schedules, and adjust shifts as needed.
  • Work with vulnerable populations, connecting them to services.
  • Escalate issues to superiors when necessary.
  • Perform field duties as required.
  • Oversee park facilities and enforce bylaws.
  • Provide information and guidance to park users.
  • Administer First Aid and handle complaints.
  • Ensure harmonious use of park facilities.
  • Manage access to park facilities and gates.
  • Verify timesheets and assist with fleet management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Completion of Grade 12 plus related courses or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading a unionized team is preferred.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR C, AED certification.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.
  • Police Record Check; Security Workers License is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of operations, bylaws, and regulations.
  • Familiarity with park areas, hazards, and natural history.
  • Skills in de-escalation, situational awareness, and communication.
  • Ability to enforce rules and perform First Aid.
  • Physical ability to walk or bike long distances and work in various weather conditions.
  • Strong record-keeping and reporting skills.

A Police Record Check is required, confirming no criminal charges or convictions related to the position.

Drivers License and Record Checks

  • Five-year ICBC Driver’s Abstract.
  • Claims History from ICBC.
  • Out-of-province/country abstract if less than five years in BC.
