The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

The Office of Engagement and Communications) within Campus and Community Planning (C&CP) is seeking a Community Engagement and Strategic Projects Specialist for a five- month contract role. The position focuses on planning and executing strategic community engagement initiatives related to the implementation of C&CP Sustainability Plans, supporting staff and faculty engagement programs including onboarding, and professional development curriculum, and performing other related duties as required. The specialist will work closely with the UBC staff, faculty and student communities and other campus partners to enhance the culture of sustainability and climate action at UBC.

Organizational Status

Reports directly to the Engagement Manager, with a dotted line to the Manager, Climate and Sustainability Engagement and works closely with, C&CP, Communications team C&CP and UBC Sustainability Hub to ensure effective coordination of strategic projects and community engagement activities.

Work Performed

1. Strategic Community Engagement Initiatives

  • Develop and implement community engagement strategies to increase awareness and participation in sustainability initiatives

  • Plan and facilitate community meetings, workshops, booths, and focus groups

  • Coordinate with relevant partners to promote engagement initiatives through various communications channels

  • Foster community involvement and participation in sustainability and climate action projects related to sustainability strategies and priorities

2. Event Planning and Implementation

  • Plan, organize and execute virtual and in-person events related to sustainability and climate action with a focus on sustainability strategies and priorities

  • Develop event programs, schedules, and promotional assets for web and print

  • Engage with speakers, vendors, and participants to ensure successful event delivery

  • Manage event budgets and expenses, and prepare financial reports

3. Staff and Faculty Engagement Program Support

  • Support the implementation and promotion of staff and faculty engagement programs

  • Lead recruitment, orientation, and coordination of program participants and volunteers

  • Develop and distribute education and promotional materials

  • Develop and maintain relevant educational curriculum, webpages, database, and communication channels

4. Administrative Duties

  • Oversee administrative support for engagement programs

  • Prepare reports, presentations and other documentation as needed

  • Supports the development and maintenance of web content related to sustainability events and programs

  • Performs other duties as required by the Engagement Manager and the Manager, Climate and Sustainability Engagement

Consequences of Error/Judgement

  • Makes decisions on community engagement strategies, event logistics, and program administration

  • Works independently under general managerial direction; work is reviewed for effectiveness within established policies and guidelines

  • Works under general managerial direction in assigned areas of responsibility

Supervision Exercised

  • May supervise volunteers and student staff involved in strategic projects and community engagement activities

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience in community engagement, event planning, or program coordination or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record of organizing and executing successful events, including managing budgets and logistics

  • Experience in developing and implementing community engagement strategies

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with partners and team members

  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative engagement strategies

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage dynamic workload

  • Comfortable with public speaking and presenting to large groups

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT) Adobe Pro and event management software

  • Experience in using social media platforms for community engagement and promotional activities

  • Knowledge of sustainability and climate action principles is an asset
