At the Department of Labour Skills and Immigration (LSI), we are responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management to protect the public and worker safety through education, outreach, inspection, enforcement, equipment registration, permits, and licenses. The Safety Branch employees across Nova Scotia do this by using the Pathways to Compliance to enhance safety through setting, promoting, verifying, and enforcing requirements under various legislation.
LSI aims to provide fairness, safety, and prosperity for all Nova Scotians by helping them live, learn, and work to their highest potential. We have over 500 employees working from offices throughout Nova Scotia, responsible for safety, labour standards, apprenticeship, immigration, population growth, and other facets of daily life.
Under the supervision of the Manager of Elevators, Lifts, and Amusements, the Inspector is responsible for enforcing the Elevator and Lifts Act and Regulations, and the Amusement Devices Safety Act and Regulations. This involves providing information, advice, technical direction, and interpretation of codes and standards for stakeholders. The Inspector conducts technical inspections, investigates accidents, incidents, and complaints.
The role includes ensuring compliance, issuing immediate orders, issuing summary offence tickets, and initiating prosecution actions. Future duties may involve contributing to the development of relevant CSA, ASME, and ASTM codes and standards.
The Inspector also reviews design drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, prepares monthly activity reports, attends meetings, and drafts correspondence.
Candidates must have completed high school, along with related trade or technical training in design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of elevating devices, plus 7 years of related experience post-training. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
Assessment tools may include written exams, standardized tests, oral presentations, interviews, and reference checks.
