The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) promotes a culturally responsive pedagogy approach to provide an inclusive, diverse, equitable, safe, and healthy education that supports both personal and academic success for the 59,000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties. Position Description:

The Skilled Trades Teacher is responsible for teaching and supporting students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The teacher will collaborate within the Inclusive Education Policy framework, participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to optimize learning experiences. The teacher will foster an experiential, safe learning environment following the Safety Protocols for Skilled Trades and Technology Education.

Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Certified Journeyperson/Red Seal status in a designated trade as defined by the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act.
  • Valid Nova Scotia Teaching License is preferred; a Vocational Teaching Certificate (VTCII) will also be considered.
  • Recent occupational experience in the skilled trades industry.
  • Understanding of the 70 skilled trades occupations designated under the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act for certification and/or apprenticeship in Nova Scotia.
  • Experience with skilled trades and career exploration.
  • Ability to create and maintain a safe classroom environment in accordance with Safety Protocols and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of PPE use and tool/material management in construction trades.
  • Understanding of experiential learning and equitable assessment practices.
  • Ability to mentor students or industry trainees.
  • Capacity to collaborate with community partners to enhance student learning.
  • Willingness to support underrepresented groups in skilled trades.
  • Experience managing building supplies, materials, and tools within a designated budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver instruction in Skilled Trades courses.
  • Design experiential learning activities aligned with EECD curriculum.
  • Engage with community and industry partners to support student learning.
  • Assess student performance, mentor, and stay current in your occupational field.
  • Participate in professional development with support from the SSRCE Youth Pathways Consultant.
  • Create and uphold a safe learning environment following safety protocols and standards.
  • Willingness to pursue ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
