Position Overview

The Mental Health & Addiction Support Worker (MHASW) plays a frontline role in supporting individuals with acute mental health challenges, substance use, homelessness, and complex needs. Working in a high-intensity emergency setting, the MHASW provides trauma-informed support focused on stabilization, safety, and rapid engagement. The role involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to respond to client needs while maintaining a safe environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Greet and triage new intakes, focusing on safety and immediate needs.
  • Engage clients using trauma-informed approaches and build trust.
  • Conduct Mental Health & Wellness Check-Ins as applicable.
  • Provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and nonjudgmental listening.
  • Respond to mental health and substance use crises, including overdose response.
  • Document interactions with timely, factual notes.
  • Coordinate with shelter staff to ensure smooth operations.
  • Participate in shift summaries and team debriefs.
  • Assist clients in accessing housing, hygiene, meals, and referrals.
  • Support navigation for detox, recovery, and emergency services.
  • Promote respectful interactions and intervene when necessary.
  • Report safety concerns and medical needs promptly.
  • Assist with light housekeeping to maintain a safe environment.
  • Conduct regular client check-ins and walk-throughs.
  • Support clients during discharge and coordinate next steps.
  • Communicate effectively across shifts and uphold confidentiality.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

This position involves a mix of overnight, day, evening, and weekend shifts.

Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Mental Health, Addictions, Community Support, Social Work, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices.
  • Experience working with homeless, addicted, or mentally ill populations.
  • Ability to respond to crises calmly and effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Level C certification.
  • Clear Criminal Records Check for vulnerable adults.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License or proof of identity.
  • Note: Past misuse or abuse of mood-altering chemicals within two years prior to application disqualifies for one year.
