Job Title: Public Service Assistant

Location: Various

Notes: Please note that Sunday hours and assignments are subject to change. TPL reserves the right to modify or cancel Sunday hours.

Dates of Work: Sunday Library Service will be offered from October 19, 2025, to April 26, 2026, excluding December 28, 2025, and April 5, 2026.

The successful candidate will be required to start between August 24 and October 5, 2025, for training purposes. Training hours will be scheduled at alternate locations between 1:30 pm and 5:00 pm.

Team Schedules:
  • Team A: Oct 19, Nov 2, 16, 30, Dec 14, 2025; Jan 11, 25; Feb 8, 22; Mar 8, 22; Apr 19, 2026.
  • Team B: Oct 26, Nov 9, 23, Dec 7, 21, 2025; Jan 4, 18; Feb 1, 15; Mar 1, 15, 29; Apr 12, 26, 2026.
Hours of Work:
  • Training: August 24 – October 5, 2025, from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm.
  • Regular Sunday hours: October 19, 2025 – April 26, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Branch Closure:

Staff assigned to branches that close during the Sunday session for State of Good Repair (SOGR) projects will have the option to either not work the affected Sundays or to work at their alternate location choice indicated on their Sunday Application Form.

Training:

Orientation is required and scheduled from August 24 – October 5, 2025. Programming training is available for those with no programming experience.

Payment:

Employees working on Sundays will receive a premium of $5.00 per hour for all hours worked.

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, performs a range of clerical duties necessary for branch or department operations, including assisting staff and patrons, managing circulation tasks, clerical routines, cash handling, assisting with collections, and supporting library programs.

Responsibilities include:
  • Carrying out circulation and call handling duties.
  • Maintaining files, ordering supplies, sorting mail.
  • Handling cash collections, assisting with specialized equipment, shelving, and shelf reading.
  • Organizing and maintaining collections, prioritizing tasks, and assisting with programs.
  • Typing reports and correspondence, handling inquiries, and working at other branches as needed.
  • Performing related duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.
  • Understanding of public service philosophy, human rights, and equity principles.
  • Tact, courtesy, good judgment, and ability to respond to diverse patron needs.
  • Knowledge of library collections, terminology, classification schemes, and clerical procedures.
  • Accuracy, speed in keyboarding, flexibility, and ability to work independently.
