Job summary

Western Veterinary Partners invites veterinary students to join externship programs across our practices, offering real-world experience that complements the classroom. Externs work with supervising veterinarians, gaining exposure to client communication, case management, and clinical procedures.

Participants will experience practice environments ranging from small animal to mixed and exotics, with a $1,000 stipend and opportunities to expand professional networks and potentially join practices

Qualifications

• Veterinary students in any grade may apply for externships.

Responsibilities

• Gain experience in practice management with supervising veterinarian.
• Take patient histories and communicate with clients.
• Perform physical exams and review estimates.
• Create treatment plans, run diagnostics, manage in-house labs.
• Observe or assist surgical procedures including dental procedures.
• Contribute to medical management of patients.

Western Veterinary Partners externship program allows students to gain valuable real-world experience by taking what you’ve learned in the classroom and bringing it to the clinic. Veterinary Students in any grade can apply for an externship with a WVP Practice as part of their clinical year externship blocks or for informal externship experience.

What you will learn:

• Working closely with the supervising veterinarian you will gain experience in all areas of practice management including; client communication - gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, reviewing estimates; Ownership of cases by creating treatment plans, diagnostics, managing and performing in house labs; Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures including dental procedures; and overall medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice learn communication skills, time management skills, fiscal responsibilities, record keeping, and relationship building with the medical team, support staff, and clients.*
