Millar Western Forest Products Limited in Whitecourt, Alberta, seeks a Mechanical Drafter with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Engineering Design and Drafting Technology. Responsibilities

• Develop fabrication, assembly, installation, and general arrangement drawings.
• Produce piping layouts, equipment layouts, structural interface drawings, and mechanical details for maintenance and capital projects.
• Interpret engineering calculations and technical documentation to develop accurate designs.
• Collaborate with engineers, maintenance, operations staff and contractors to develop cost-effective design solutions.
• Revise drawings based on engineering review, field verification, and project requirements.
• Ensure drawings comply with CSA/ASME/API codes and company standards.
• Assist with field measurements, site verification and as-built documentation.
• Maintain drawing revisions and document control per procedures.
• Support procurement and construction activities with technical documentation.

Responsibilities Include:

• Preparing detailed 2D drawings and 3D models of mechanical components, assemblies, systems, and equipment using AutoCAD.
• Developing fabrication, assembly, installation, and general arrangement drawings.
• Producing piping layouts, equipment layouts, structural interface drawings, and mechanical details for maintenance and capital projects.
• Interpreting engineering calculations, design specifications, sketches, and technical documentation to develop accurate designs and drawings.
• Collaborating with engineers, maintenance personnel, operations staff, and contractors to develop practical and cost-effective design solutions.
• Revising drawings based on engineering review, field verification, site conditions and project requirements.
• Ensuring drawings comply with applicable regulations, industry standards, company specifications, and drafting standards.
• Assisting with field measurements, site verification, and the development of as-built documentation.
• Maintaining drawing revisions, engineering records, and document control in accordance with company procedures.
• Supporting procurement, fabrication, and construction activities by providing technical documentation and responding to drawing-related inquiries.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will possess a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Engineering Design and Drafting Technology, or a related engineering technology discipline, along with a minimum of two years of drafting or mechanical design experience in an industrial, manufacturing, engineering, consulting, or construction environment.

Eligibility for registration, or registration as a CTech or AScT through ASET, is considered an asset.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced proficiency with AutoCAD and 3D modeling software, along with experience developing manufacturing, fabrication, and installation drawings. Experience working in a heavy industrial environment such as pulp and paper, forestry, oil and gas, mining, or manufacturing would be considered an asset.

Candidates should have a solid understanding of engineering drawings, fabrication practices, welding symbols, and mechanical systems. Familiarity with piping systems, pressure equipment, rotating equipment, and industrial processes is highly desirable.

Knowledge of applicable industry standards, including CSA, ASME, and API codes, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office and engineering document management systems, will support success in this role.

Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, combined with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders, are essential.
