Job summary

Qualus Corporation in Canada is seeking a Drafter Technician III to join our established drafting team. You will support Transmission & Distribution projects by preparing and maintaining engineering drawings from markups and design instructions, and independently manage drafting deliverables for substations, lines, and distribution systems.

Proficiency with AutoCAD and MicroStation, strong attention to detail, and the ability to interpret engineers' markups are required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in CAD Technology or related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • 4–8 years of drafting experience, preferably supporting utility, industrial, infrastructure, or engineering projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar CAD software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong knowledge of engineering drawings, drafting principles, and document control practices.
  • Ability to interpret engineering markups and apply revisions to drawings.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and revise engineering drawings from markups and design direction independently.
  • Develop drafting deliverables including 2D/3D layouts, BOMs, and diagrams.
  • Apply company and industry drafting standards to deliverables.
  • Incorporate design revisions using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other CAD software.
  • Maintain drawing files, project records, and document management systems.
  • Perform quality reviews for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Identify discrepancies and coordinate with engineers and designers to resolve them.
  • Provide guidance to less experienced drafting staff on procedures and standards.
  • Coordinate with team to ensure timely delivery of design documents.
  • Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Follow safety, quality, and drafting standards in all work activities.
  • Complete tasks within established schedules and budgets.

Position Overview

Power your future with Qualusin our Grid Engineering Canada business. We are seeking a Drafter Technician III to join our well-established drafting team.

This role offers long-term workload stability, exposure to a diverse portfolio of transmission, distribution, substation, and renewable energy projects, and the opportunity to develop your technical capabilities within a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

You will support Transmission & Distribution projects, preparing and maintaining engineering drawings from markups, sketches, and design instructions provided by Engineers and Designers. Working independently on assigned drafting activities, you will contribute to the successful delivery of transmission lines, substations, and distribution system projects while applying advanced knowledge of CAD tools, utility design standards, and engineering drawing production.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and revise engineering drawings and diagrams from markups and design direction provided by Engineers and Designers while working independently on assigned project deliverables
  • Develop drafting deliverables including 2D and 3D general arrangements, sections, elevations, bills of materials, cable, duct and bolt schedules, electrical room layouts, equipment layouts, grounding layouts, panel layouts, single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring drawings, and overhead, crossing, and underground distribution drawings
  • Apply and interpret company, client, and industry drafting standards to ensure the consistent development of project deliverables
  • Incorporate design markups and revisions into drawing packages using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other approved CAD software
  • Maintain drawing files, project records, and document management systems in accordance with company procedures
  • Retrieve, enter, and update design information within drawings and project databases
  • Perform detailed quality reviews of assigned drawing packages to verify accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance with drafting standards and project requirements
  • Identify drawing discrepancies, missing information, and drafting conflicts and coordinate with engineers, designers, and project team members to resolve them
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced drafting staff on drafting procedures, CAD tools, and company standards as required
  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, and other project team members to ensure accurate and timely delivery of design documents
  • Participate in design reviews, team meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Follow established safety, quality, and drafting standards in all work activities
  • Support project delivery by completing assigned tasks within established schedules and budgets
Minimum Qualifications
  • Diploma in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Technology, Drafting Technology, Engineering Design & Drafting Technology, or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • 4-8 years of drafting experience, preferably supporting utility, industrial, infrastructure, or engineering projects
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar CAD software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Strong knowledge of engineering drawings, drafting principles, document control practices, and drafting standards
  • Ability to interpret engineering markups and design instructions and accurately incorporate revisions into project deliverables
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality deliverables
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Experience with transmission, distribution, or substation projects is considered an asset
  • Proficiency with Revit, ACC/Forma & BIM workflow (model setup, family creation, & class detection)
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D, GIS, Inventor, Raster Design, AutoTURN, or other engineering design software is considered an asset
  • Exposure to AutoCAD customization tools and programming languages such as LISP or VBA is considered an asset
