Job description

Overview

As a member of the military, Drafting and Survey Technicians (DS Tech) provide both deployed and domestic drafting and survey support to the Canadian Armed Forces and other government departments worldwide.

Drafting and Survey Technicians belong to the Military Engineering Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces. Their primary responsibilities include:

  1. Collecting geodetic survey data using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and other survey equipment
  2. Using data to produce digital and hard copy civil and site drawings, as well as designs of specific areas
  3. Utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce digital and hard copy designs
  4. Providing survey and drawing support to military specialist engineering teams

Work environment

Drafting and Survey Technicians are members of the Royal Canadian Air Force. They may support all CAF exercises and operations, including those led by the Royal Canadian Navy. The primary work environment is in an office setting; however, fieldwork is a significant component, conducted in approved weather conditions, 24/7, on bases, wings, or in operational theatres. They use high-tech computer workstations and specialized software for drafting and survey applications. Positions are available in Kingston, ON, and Gagetown, NB, with potential postings to Brussels, Belgium.

If you join the Regular Force, after completing all required training, you will be assigned to your first base, with some flexibility regarding relocations. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you will serve part-time through a specific Reserve unit, typically working one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.

Training

The initial training is the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. This physically demanding course covers core skills and knowledge common to all trades, including maintaining physical fitness standards.

Drafting and Survey Technicians attend the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (CFSME) at CFB Gagetown, Oromocto, NB, where they receive instruction on:

  • Planning and conducting land surveys
  • Survey-related mathematics
  • Data and material management
  • AutoCAD software
  • Civil and building systems design
  • Construction stakeouts
  • As-built drawings
  • Construction engineering tasks and safety

Opportunities for specialization include geodetic terrestrial survey training, advanced geodetic applications, and specialized design software, through formal courses and on-the-job training.

Part-time options

This position is available part-time with the Primary Reserve across various locations in Canada. Reserve members serve part-time at a local unit, often while attending school or working civilian jobs, and are paid during training. They are not required to relocate but may volunteer to do so or deploy on missions.

Reserve members are trained to the same standards as the Regular Force and typically serve evenings and weekends, with opportunities for full-time positions. They receive 92.8% of Regular Force pay, benefits, and potential pension contributions.
