Qualifications

Position Overview

The service exists to keep families together. The service supports a child’s larger treatment plan as managed by a children’s mental health worker. It supports the family’s role as care giver to the child in treatment by:

  • providing the family with the coping skills required to address the stresses resulting from environmental factors and the child’s mental health issues;
  • treating the family members with mental health needs, or referring adult family members to the adult mental health / service sector to address personal needs;
  • supporting the family members emotionally throughout the treatment process;
  • assisting the family in addressing crises, and
  • helping the family understand the treatment needs of the child.

The service complements mental health programs that are treating a child by:

  • engaging with other service providers who are working with a child;
  • sharing and receiving treatment information from other service providers, and
  • operating in conjunction with the child’s mental health worker.

The Service Helps The Family Maintain Or Improve Its Ability To Preserve Itself As a Healthy And Effective System By Engaging

  • the primary caregivers;
  • the child’s siblings and
  • any extended family or community members who have a vested interest in the family.

All services must be consistent with the Dilico Anishinabek Family Care philosophy, approach, goals and learning environment. The District Family Preservation Coordinator will support the delivery of integrated services from the point of intake to discharge for all children, youth and families.

Qualifications And Requirements

  • A minimum HBSW or related degree with four years child/family counselling experience is required. An MSW is preferred.
  • minimum of four (4) years direct service and counselling with children, adolescents and families;
  • a combination of training and successful experience in working with the Anishinabek people, culture, communities, traditions, and teachings ;
  • significant experience in family intervention and / or group facilitation.
  • satisfactory Criminal Records Search; including a Vulnerable Sector Search;
  • a valid Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate is required;
  • work flexible hours, according to the needs of families;
  • travel substantially in communities in and around the District of Thunder Bay;
  • work in the homes and locations familiar to client families;
  • posses a valid Class “G” Driver’s Licence, and
  • have access to a personal vehicle;
  • carry satisfactory liability insurance;
  • produce a satisfactory driver’s record.

Hours of Work: 32.5 hours per week
