The Distribution System Technologist Apprentice operates, installs, commissions, constructs, repairs, maintains, and decommissions all types of substation equipment, protective relay and control systems, station metering, distribution automation equipment, and SCADA systems. This includes completing all associated work orders, specifications, engineering drawings, reports, and work procedures, under the direction of a Distribution System Technologist.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and coordinate work activities related to projects.
- Install, inspect, maintain, and repair all types of substation equipment, protective relay and control systems, station metering, distribution automation equipment, and SCADA systems.
- Commission, test, and approve for service all substation distribution equipment, protection and control systems, station metering, distribution automation equipment, SCADA systems, and substation communication systems.
- Provide operating instructions for substation equipment.
- Perform cable terminations and testing of stations' primary and secondary cables.
- Commission, test, and maintain all substation building protection systems, including fire/smoke detection and suppression.
- Install, repair, maintain substation building equipment as required.
- Conduct switching operations.
- Record on/off work protection.
- Test, repair, and maintain high voltage test equipment and live line tools.
- Complete, maintain, and update work orders, engineering drawings, specifications, reports, work procedures, and related documentation.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose failures in substation equipment, protection and control systems, SCADA, communication systems, and station metering.
- Perform infra-red inspections.
- Install and maintain switchgear stenciling and locking equipment.
- Prepare reports on failure causes, remediation activities, risk management, and post-repair testing, implementing recommended actions.
- Identify defects, contraventions, and hazards.
- Operate electric cranes in stations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a diploma in Electrical/Electromechanical Technologist, or a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, or a Bachelor of Technology with a focus on Energy Systems Engineering (August 2025 graduates accepted).
- Valid “G” driver’s license and eligibility for a “DZ” license in Ontario.
- Related hands-on field experience preferred.
- Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) certification from OACETT preferred.
- Proficiency in PC environments and engineering software.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of utility safety regulations and practices, with a commitment to safe work practices.
- Strong customer service orientation, leadership skills, adherence to policies, and problem-solving abilities.
- Dependability, high-quality work, adaptability, and effective collaboration skills.
