Job summary

Primary is seeking a Distribution Engineer to join our Burnaby office. You will perform technical reviews of electrical utility distribution design packages, seal drawings, mentor staff, and design both underground and overhead infrastructure. Collaboration with project teams and stakeholders is essential for successful project execution.

Ideal candidates hold an engineering degree with a P.Eng./P.L.Eng. designation, have at least 2 years of distribution design experience, and possess a valid

Qualifications

  • Engineering or Applied Science degree in electrical or civil preferred.
  • Professional designation (P.Eng. or P.L.Eng.) through EGBC is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years in electrical utility distribution design.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Review distribution design packages including drawings and calculations.
  • Seal electrical distribution design drawings.
  • Mentor engineers and technologists on projects.
  • Design underground and overhead utility infrastructure.
  • Prepare material take-offs and estimates.
  • Perform voltage drop and transformer loading calculations.
  • Coordinate with clients, consultants, and inspectors.
  • Manage project schedules and tracking.
  • Develop and update tools, processes, and documentation.
  • Attend site visits and field inspections as needed.

Job description

We have an opening for a Distribution Engineer in our Burnaby office.

Responsibilities:
  • Technical review of electric utility distribution design packages, including drawings, material take-offs, and calculations.
  • Sealing of electric utility distribution design drawings.
  • Technical mentorship of engineers and technologists.
  • Electrical and civil design of underground and overhead electric utility infrastructure.
  • Material take-offs and project estimating.
  • Voltage drop and transformer loading calculations.
  • Cable pull calculations using Pull Planner.
  • Pole modeling calculations using SPIDAcalc and PLS-CADD.
  • Reviewing engineering consultant drawings such as civil, buildings electrical, landscape, and architectural to coordinate and eliminate design conflicts.
  • Project schedule management and tracking.
  • Research and application of engineering standards and codes.
  • Collaboration with the project team (project managers, designers, drafters, engineers of record, and field inspectors) to ensure projects are executed successfully.
  • Design coordination with external clients, engineering consultants, utility approval teams, municipalities, material and construction suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Creating design redlines in Bluebeam.
  • Leading continuous improvement initiatives and updating tools, processes, documentation, and automation.
  • Periodic off-site meetings, site visits, and field inspections.
Qualifications:
  • Engineering or Applied Science degree or diploma from a recognized university or college (electrical or civil preferred).
  • P.Eng. or P.L.Eng. designation through EGBC.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the design of electrical utility distribution projects.
  • Class 5 driver’s license.
Additional Assets:
  • Familiarity with BC Hydro design and construction standards and tools.
  • Exposure to SPIDAcalc, PLS-CADD, Pull Planner, AutoCAD, or AGi32 software.
  • Experience creating Visual Basic Application (VBA) macros in Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and drive for improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop business relationships conducted in a professional manner.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing responsibilities concurrently.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
