Job summary

EnPowered is hiring a Dispatch Operator in Canada to own market events, optimize customer savings, and control field batteries within energy markets such as IESO, PJM, and NYISO. You will leverage AI tools to analyze forecasts, weather, and grid data, and you will challenge recommendations to beat the market for our customers.

You will grow into the primary decision-maker, coordinating with the engineering team and ensuring precise, timely notifications to clients.

Qualifications

  • Two to five years in the energy sector, such as utility operations, grid or system operations, dispatch, or energy services.
  • Solid understanding of electricity markets and commercial electricity bills, including wholesale prices, capacity, coincident peaks, demand charges, and demand response.
  • Comfort making decisions from forecasts, weather data, and probabilities rather than certainties.
  • Calm, decisive judgment under time pressure.
  • Precise written communication, because customers act on what you send.
  • Daily use of AI tools, the habit of checking their output, and an interest in building your own.
  • Availability for early mornings, evenings, and some weekends during peak seasons.
  • Drive to become a recognized expert in market operations. This role grows in depth and responsibility rather than in people management.

Responsibilities

  • Manage market events from start to finish. Monitor market conditions, decide when and how customers should respond, and run each event from the first alert to the all clear.
  • Call coincident peaks. Identify likely peak days and hours in IESO, PJM, and NYISO using forecast models, weather data, and grid operator reports.
  • Run demand response events. Assess IESO capacity auction events and the growing number of utility demand response programs; decide what to pass on to customers and manage activations through to settlement.
  • Keep registrations, bids, and auction submissions on track.
  • Manage unique, customer-specific opportunities. Build a plan for each customer and execute it using batteries and flexible loads.
  • Control assets through our energy management system (EMS). Dispatch batteries directly, set operating limits, and work with engineering to improve tools.
  • Keep customers informed with accurate, timely event notifications.
  • Train our AI tools by reviewing recommendations, correcting them, and recording reasoning to improve future outputs.
  • Review results and find new opportunities after each event and season; track programs and market opportunities and bring recommendations to the team.

Job description

About EnPowered

Electricity grids are under more pressure every year. Demand is rising with electrification and reshoring, heat waves push peak usage higher, and more of our supply comes from intermittent wind and solar that rise and fall with the weather. To support our economy as we transition to cleaner energy, grids need flexibility: customers who can store energy when it is plentiful and/or reduce their draw when the grid is stretched.

EnPowered makes that flexibility simple and profitable for businesses. We support hundreds of large commercial, industrial, and institutional businesses in Ontario and the U.S., helping them to avoid costly price spikes. Together they save $50-100M a year, while reducing their demand when the grid needs it most.

We also control the largest fleet of behind-the-meter battery assets in Canada. For industrial sites that need reliable backup power, we install batteries at no upfront cost, then own and operate them in energy markets on the customer’s behalf. The customer gets resilience and lower energy costs without changing how they run their business.

Our vision: Every business and home is actively participating in the electricity grid.

Our mission: Enabling a profitable transition to sustainable energy.

How we work
  • Small team, clear ownership. We are a small team, split into five cross-functional capability teams. The people who build our tools work directly with the people who use them, and everyone knows which outcomes they are responsible for.
  • AI is part of everyone's job. We get a lot done for a team our size, partly because everyone uses AI to solve their own problems. Everyone has access to all of our data and the latest AI models, and is expected to use them to excel in their role.
  • We move fast and improve constantly. We set ambitious goals every quarter, break them into monthly milestones, and check progress as a team every week. We would rather ship something useful this week and improve it next week than wait for perfection. This allows us to learn quickly, adapt on the fly, and move faster than other companies.
The role: Dispatch Operator

Our customers save money by changing when and how they use electricity. As our Dispatch Operator, you will be part of the team owning every market event we manage on their behalf, with one goal: maximize their savings while minimizing disruption to their operations. That covers coincident peaks, demand response, monthly demand charges, and energy arbitrage across IESO, PJM, and NYISO, with more markets coming. More and more, it also means directly controlling batteries in the field as energy markets keep changing.

The companies that win in this market are the ones that adapt fastest, so you will be expected to use AI to stay at the cutting edge. Our peak calling agent already analyzes forecasts, weather, and grid conditions, recommends decisions, and drafts customer notifications. You will run tools like this in live events, challenge their recommendations, and keep improving them so we keep beating the market for our customers.

What you'll do
  • Manage market events from start to finish. Monitor market conditions, decide when and how customers should respond, and run each event from the first alert to the all clear. You will start as part of the team making these calls and grow into the primary decision-maker.
  • Call coincident peaks. Identify likely peak days and hours in IESO (Ontario 5CP), PJM, and NYISO using forecast models, weather data, and grid operator reports.
  • Run demand response events.
    • Assess IESO capacity auction events and the growing number of utility demand response programs.
    • Decide what to pass on to customers, and manage activations through to settlement.
    • Keep registrations, bids, and auction submissions on track.
  • Manage unique, customer‑specific opportunities. Each site has its own equipment, operating limits, and savings opportunities. Find them, build a plan for each customer, and carry it out using batteries and flexible loads, without compromising the commitments we've made to that customer.
  • Control assets through our energy management system (EMS). Dispatch batteries directly, set and monitor operating limits, and work with our engineering team to improve these tools over time.
  • Keep customers informed. Make sure every event notification is accurate, on time, and tells customers exactly what to do.
  • Train our AI tools. Review the agent's recommendations and drafts, correct them, and record your reasoning so they improve. Test them against historical events and suggest new data they need.
  • Review results and find new opportunities.
    • After every event and every season, compare decisions with outcomes and turn what you learn into better procedures and tools.
    • Track new programs, rule changes, and market opportunities, and bring recommendations to the team.
What you bring
Required
  • Two to five years in the energy sector, such as utility operations, grid or system operations, dispatch, or energy services.
  • A solid understanding of electricity markets and commercial electricity bills, including wholesale prices, capacity, coincident peaks, demand charges, and demand response.
  • A drive to become a recognized expert in market operations. This role grows in depth and responsibility rather than in people management.
Nice to have
  • Dispatch experience with batteries, generators, or other distributed energy resources.
  • Experience with an EMS or SCADA system.
  • Knowledge of Ontario's renewed market (day‑ahead market and OZP), PJM, or NYISO.
  • Experience with the IESO capacity auction or Ontario's Industrial Conservation Initiative (Class A).
  • Python or SQL for working with price, forecast, and interval data.
  • A background in meteorology or weather forecasting.
What success looks like
  • First 30 days: you understand the markets and programs we operate in, the operating limits of our customers' sites, and how our AI tools reach their recommendations. You have shadowed events and run the full notification sequence on test events.
  • First 90 days: you are running events in at least one market as part of the decision team, with AI‑drafted notifications that need only minor edits. You have made at least one improvement to our procedures or tools.
  • First 12 months: you are the primary decision‑maker for most events across our markets. Battery dispatch through the EMS is routine, and you have brought at least one new market opportunity to the team.
What we offer
  • Rewarding work that directly shapes how Ontario's grid uses flexible energy.
  • A competitive salary and stock options.
  • Health benefits.
  • Flexible schedules,a work‑from‑home environment, and a generous vacation policy.
  • Regular team events, including quarterly team onsites.
