Job description

The Program

Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of persons in their communities through a variety of programs and services.

This program in Edmonton, Alberta, encourages persons with developmental disabilities to maximize their independence, further develop their unique strengths, and enjoy community integration through social, recreational, and community activities.

This program provides supports for one female client with complex behaviors and mental health concerns, who uses a walker for mobility and is at risk for suicidal attempts/ideations.

The Position

The Disability Services Worker (DSW), under supervision of their supervisor, facilitates and monitors education and development programs to provide individuals with physical, behavioral, emotional, and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community, family members, guardians, and employers. They support adults in gaining independent living skills, including assistance with daily activities such as meal preparation, household chores, laundry, and community access (transportation to educational, recreational, and community programs/events). They also mentor, advocate, and empower clients to be self-reliant and confident. This position reports to the Team Leader.

This is a complex needs behavior position as individuals may be verbally and physically aggressive and require mental health supports and interventions throughout all shifts.

An additional $3.30 per hour will be paid when supporting complex needs clients. This amount does not apply to scheduled training/meetings or non-complex shifts.

Scheduling

Two (2) permanent full-time positions, working up to 40 hours per week:

  • Position 1: 0800-2000, on a two-week rotation
  • Position 2: 0700-1900, on a two-week rotation

Note: Bona Fide Occupational Requirement: This is a gender-specific position based on the behavior and needs of the persons served.

In Your Role You Will

  • Support individuals with household chores, life skills, and personal hygiene (if needed).
  • Provide supports as per the individual's care plan.
  • Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to manage behaviors.
  • Administer medication and provide first aid when necessary.
  • Use computer programs to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client.
  • A detailed list of key responsibilities will be available at the time of interview.
  • Prior to employment, all applicants must provide a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter, as required by province and sector.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

  • Ability to work in environments with potential for aggression/violence.
  • Minimum 2 years experience working with individuals with significant mental health concerns, aggressive behaviors, and/or trauma.
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Preferably a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Disability Service Work, Social Work, Special Education, or related fields.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or GDL with 2 years driving experience) with a clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle.
  • Current First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification (NVCI or CPI).
  • Training in Trauma-Informed Practice, Medication Administration, Suicide Intervention, Managing Aggressive Behavior (UMAB), Conflict Resolution, Food Safe.
  • Confidence and ability to function effectively in a crisis.
