The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is seeking one (1) innovative and experienced Disability Management Consultant to assist our employees with navigating the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB), Short Term (STD) and Long Term (LTD) disability processes. Our Disability Management Consultants actively work in consultation with employees, the work area and other internal/external stakeholders to develop and implement return to work plans and act on opportunities to provide early interventions to prevent lost time from work. Duties include:

  • Managing the EPS WCB account through monitoring and strategically interpreting time loss statistics in order to identify risks and proactively plan improvements with the Occupational Health & Safety Section. The Disability Management Consultant promotes employee health through the implementation of early intervention initiatives (Occupational Injury Service (OIS) Clinics, on-site physiotherapy, etc.) and modified work opportunities.
  • Dedicated to the Emergency Communications & Operations Management (ECOM) Branch.
  • Determining eligibility for short term disability benefits guided by the collective agreements, case management, and all aspects of building return to work plans for short term claims. Collaborates with the Long Term Disability provider to determine eligibility for benefit coverage. Nature of illness, treatment plan, and prognosis for return to work, barriers to return to work, and the functional abilities for the employee are considered when developing case plans. The desired outcome is to provide wage replacement benefits to eligible employees and successfully assist them in returning to the workplace.
  • Leading the duty to accommodate process to ensure compliance with legislation which will require strong negotiation skills and knowledge of Human Rights Legislation.
  • Ongoing development and improvement of our current disability management processes and best practices.
  • Developing a positive and results-oriented working relationship with a multidisciplinary team including labor relations, occupational safety, occupational health nurses, Reintegration Unit, and Employee and Family Assistance.
  • Public speaking to provide education on our programs to all levels of the organization.
  • Contributing to project work which may include leading or participating.
Qualifications
  • University Degree in a Health-Related Discipline or Social Science, eligibility for a professional designation related to Disability Management.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in Disability Case Management/Vocational Rehabilitation. An equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience may be considered.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation (WCB and Duty to Accommodate, Human Rights) and how this legislation relates to returning our employees back to work.
  • Public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with medical professionals in the community with a strong understanding of appropriate medical assessments and reports.
  • Outstanding communication and customer service skills and the ability to influence and contribute to decision making in a supportive and constructive manner. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain decisions and provide clear direction and instructions.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all interested stakeholders in a team-oriented environment.
  • Advanced computer skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft and Cority (Medgate) would be an asset.
  • Experience working within a policing environment would be an asset.
  • Experience in project management work would be an asset.
  • Applicants may be tested.
  • As part of your pre-hire screening, you will be required to complete an Enhanced Security Clearance. Should you accept employment with the Edmonton Police Service you acknowledge and agree to participate in future Enhanced Security Re-Clearances at scheduled intervals or in any other circumstances, exigent or otherwise, as required by Human Resources Division.

Hours of Work:
36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of the variable hours of work program.

Salary Range:
95M, Salary Grade: PT2, $96,664- $120,829 (Annually).
