Role Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the proactive management of assigned disability claims (STD, LTD and Life Waiver) and workplace claims by supporting return to work integration for all Canadian sites.
  • Obtain additional information by phone or in writing to the applicant, employer, physicians, and other medical service providers inclusive of the governing Compensation Boards and 3rd party providers.
  • Communicate and liaise with the Safety Team and Operational Leaders on injury and environment concerns, safe and early return to work.
  • Ensure the accuracy of information in company data management and storage systems.
  • Evaluate employee abilities as per medical documentation or standard medical precautions, identify benefit entitlement, develop return to work (RTW) and/or workplace accommodation plans in cooperation with appropriate parties, provide support and actively monitor the plan in accordance with Emterra’s policies and procedures, Employer’s obligations under provincial workers compensation, Duty to Accommodate under Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, Privacy laws, FIPPA, etc., and provincial specific legislation (e.g. AODA).
  • Review and lead Emterra’s occupational and non-occupational injury administration and program, disability management programs utilizing best practice to optimize supports and resources at each site.
  • Provide regular updates to a variety of stakeholders (employees, managers, physicians, specialists, unions, providers, etc.) and gather the relevant information allowing the initial and ongoing assessment and management of an employee’s occupational and non-occupational injuries.
  • Liaise with LTD Insurer to determine status of claims, action plans and next steps.
  • Develop, compile, coordinate, analyze and monitor various case management reports.
  • Lead and develop absence and disability training for leaders.
  • Participate in the benefit premium renewal communication.
  • Identify and communicate areas of improvement and cost savings opportunities to senior leadership.
  • Communicate and create relationships, understanding of expectations and support and train on the duties and responsibilities for all parties on Claims management, as required.
Qualifications
  • 3-5 years’ experience with disability management.
  • Post secondary education in a related field is an asset.
  • Occupational Health and Safety certification as asset.
  • Certified Disability Management Professional certification preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of Provincial Workers Compensation legislation, Provincial Employment Standards Acts and Occupational Health and Safety regulations, Duty to Accommodate, Human Rights Code, Privacy laws, FIPPA, etc.; and provincial specific legislation (e.g., AODA).
  • Excellent knowledge of specialized health procedures as they apply to assessment of and primary care for injuries and illness.
  • Ability to communicate with various levels of management, staff, and union representatives.
  • Ability to liaise with external agencies, partners, and other organizations.
  • Ability to develop and analyze relevant occupational health and safety statistical data.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues and to protect confidential medical information.
  • Excellent computer skills with working knowledge of various software, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent interpersonal and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and professional judgement.
  • Previous work experience at Provincial Workers Compensation organizations is an asset.
