Department: Environment and Climate Change

The mandate of the Department of Environment and Climate Change is to manage land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This includes promoting, planning, and supporting the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, and protecting, restoring, and stewarding the environment for the social and economic benefit of all Northwest Territories residents.

Job Information

Do you have an interest in wildlife management and conservation? Working and living in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the Director, Wildlife Management plays a key senior leadership and strategic role to promote and support the sustainable use and development of natural resources and to protect, conserve and enhance the NWT environment for the social and economic benefit of all NWT residents. This robust role will have an opportunity to create the development of innovative programs and initiatives in a progressive co-management system.

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Wildlife and Forest Management, you will have an opportunity to lead transformative changes to the strategic and operational policy and regulatory environment that will facilitate stewardship and management of wildlife populations and wildlife habitat. You can make a positive impact on the diversity of wildlife species in the NWT and the integrity of habitats upon which wildlife depend.

The ideal candidate will possess expert knowledge of renewable and non-renewable resources theory, practices and principles. Some of the key critical skills and abilities include:

• Effective and strong communication and analytical skills
• Excellent leadership skills in a cross-cultural setting with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and represent the department.
• Strong strategic planning abilities

Typically, these skills and expert knowledge are acquired through the completion of a graduate degree in environmental or resource management or related field, with at least ten (10) years of directly related experience in renewable resource management in the public sector. Experience to include at least five (5) years in a managerial position with responsibilities for strategy, policy or program development, and managing a large budget and staff.; or equivalencies can include:

• Completion of an undergraduate degree in environmental or resource management or related field, with at least twelve (12) years of directly related experience in renewable resource management in the public sector. Experience to include at least five (5) years in a managerial position with responsibilities for strategic planning, policy or program development, and managing a large budget and staff; or
• Completion of a diploma in environmental or resource management or related field, with at least fourteen (14) years of directly related experience in renewable resource management in the public sector. Experience to include at least five (5) years in a managerial position with responsibilities for strategic planning, policy or program development, and managing a large budget and staff.
