About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Director of Software Development to lead the engineering strategy and execution for our next-generation AI and Generative AI platform. In this highly visible and impactful role, you will lead a talented and growing team of engineers focused on delivering robust, scalable, and innovative AI capabilities that are foundational to our products and customer experiences. You will be a transformational member of UKG Product & Technology group reporting to the Vice President, Engineering, UKG is who possess a unique balance of technical depth, strategic thinking, creative skills, and product development experience. This role blends deep technical leadership with organizational influence and hands-on execution. You will be accountable for driving the platform vision from concept to production, aligning AI engineering efforts across teams, and ensuring our solutions meet enterprise-grade standards of reliability, performance, and security. This is a rare opportunity to operate at the frontier of applied AI, working across functional boundaries to turn ambitious ideas into tangible value.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical & Strategic Leadership:
• Define and own the technical vision and strategy for our AI platform, with a strong focus on enabling scalable, responsible, and performant GenAI capabilities across multiple product lines.
• Translate research and architectural prototypes into robust, production-ready systems that serve real customer use cases at scale.
• Collaborate closely with AI architects, research scientists, product managers, and other engineering leaders to ensure alignment between long-term vision and near-term deliverables.
Engineering Execution:
• Lead the end-to-end delivery lifecycle of complex, AI-powered software systems—from roadmap definition through design, development, deployment, and maintenance.
• Establish and enforce strong engineering practices, including CI/CD, observability, code quality, technical design reviews, and security best practices.
• Drive platformization and reuse by building core AI infrastructure and services that are extensible, efficient, and easy to adopt by downstream teams.
Organizational Leadership:
• Build, scale, and mentor a high-performing, diverse engineering team with deep expertise in distributed systems, AI/ML, and platform development.
• Develop leaders within your team and foster a culture of innovation, inclusion, psychological safety, and accountability.
• Create clarity and alignment across geographically distributed teams through crisp communication, strong planning, and effective execution.
Cross-Functional Influence:
• Partner with product management, architecture, data science, research, and design teams to shape strategy, define priorities, and deliver on key outcomes.
• Engage directly with internal stakeholders, executive leadership, and occasionally customers to represent the platform’s capabilities, direction, and impact.
• Act as a champion for responsible AI, working with internal policy, legal, and security teams to ensure our systems are trustworthy and compliant.
Innovation & Thought Leadership:
• Keep pace with the fast-moving AI landscape, proactively evaluating new technologies, tools, and techniques that could benefit the platform and our customers.
• Encourage a mindset of continuous learning and technical curiosity within the team, staying connected to external communities and advancing our internal thought leadership.
• Represent the company’s AI engineering excellence in external forums (e.g., tech talks, publications, open-source contributions) as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
• 12+ years of experience in software development, with at least 5 years focused on AI/ML or GenAI systems.
• 8+ years of experience managing high-performing engineering teams, including at least 2 years at the Director level or equivalent.
• Proven track record of delivering large-scale, production-ready AI or ML infrastructure, platforms, or applications in a cloud-native environment.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, modern software architectures, and frameworks for AI/ML (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain).
• Strong communication skills with the ability to inspire teams, influence technical strategy, and engage with executive stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field (PhD preferred but not required).
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with large language models, multi-modal architectures, or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems.
• Familiarity with MLOps practices and tools, including model lifecycle management, monitoring, and governance.
• Hands-on experience with cloud AI platforms such as AWS SageMaker, Azure ML, or Google Vertex AI.
• Passion for building inclusive, psychologically safe teams that deliver innovative and ethically responsible AI solutions.
• A track record of collaborating across organizations to drive alignment, prioritize platform investments, and deliver business value.
