Basic Function

The Director Engineering oversees all aspects and activities of the Engineering Department including day to day support for Operations and Maintenance, development and execution of the capital plan, and longer term initiatives.

The Director Engineering oversees all aspects and activities of the Engineering Department including day to day support for Operations and Maintenance, development and execution of the capital plan, and longer term initiatives.

Job Duties

  • Manages the engineering, project, capital, and technical needs of the refinery, directing refinery technical efforts in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Instrument / Electrical, and Drafting disciplines
  • Provides Engineering support through staff engineers to Operations, Maintenance, Lubeplex, Environmental, and Safety Departments
  • Manages, prioritizes, and maintains engineering resources
  • Provides strategic direction for the future success and profitability of the facility
  • Provides guidance, coaching, and mentorship to junior and senior team members to support professional development, enhance performance and foster a collaborative, growth-oriented work environment
  • Attracts, retains, leads and develops the right people with the right skills and personal traits in the right roles
  • Drives a high integrity, team-oriented culture within the organization focused on operational excellence, profitability, environmental stewardship, and safety-first mentality
  • Ensures proper Management of Change (MOC) standards and processes are followed
  • Ensures compliance with current and future standards, regulations, laws and directives for the safe operation of the plant
  • Ensures all Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements are met
  • Directs Engineering team in supporting Operations to optimize profitability of the plant and process units, providing observations and recommendations.
  • Ensures proper and compliant process design and / or equipment changes / upgrades for the plant
  • Provides guidance and oversight to the development of the seven year capital plan
  • Oversees annual capital planning, development, and execution from concept to construction
  • Promotes safety, sustainability, and cost effectiveness in all design and optimization activities.
  • Ensures scope development, engineering, and the final product meet targeted criteria for all projects
  • Reviews and / or performs economic sensitivity analysis and ROI assessments for capital upgrades
  • May oversee RFQ, bid tabulation, and contract development for all refinery projects
  • Oversees maintenance of records for all projects and engineering work performed by the group
  • Provides unit startup assistance for existing and new facilities
  • Reviews catalyst and chemical performance and usage and provides support to Operations in all catalyst and chemical applications, including providing guidelines for startup and / or usage
  • Ensures maintenance and optimization of unit process controls and systems
  • Develops area assignments for personnel in the Engineering Departments
  • Aligns project assignments to support expertise development relative to area assignments

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their superior, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

  • A minimum of 15 years of on-the-job experience is required. A significant amount of experience in the refining or petro-chemical industries is required
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of direct leadership experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, typically chemical or mechanical discipline or related field is required
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or eligible is preferred

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities with a focus on direction of work, team development and talent management
  • Advanced spreadsheet, database and word processing applications knowledge
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication
  • Strong interpersonal, time-management and organizational skills; project management, budgeting, and scheduling skills
  • Strong familiarity with refinery operations, ability to develop quality controls and read and assess statistical and operational reports
  • Advanced reading and writing skills, with the ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations

Supervisory / Managerial Responsibility

  • Responsible for the supervision of staff employees in a number of engineering disciplines such as Process Safety, Process, Project, Plant and Technical Services

Work Conditions

  • Office and plant based with up to 5-10% travel by land and air required within Canada and the US
  • Petroleum refinery, warehouse / plant environment, and out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals pressure, tanks, rotating equipment, working in confined spaces, and exposure to the risk of electrical shock
  • Subject to all temperatures, weather, and varying road conditions

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting and / or carrying up to 50lbs, climbing up to 200ft, ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid provincial driverâÂÂs license and proof of insurance required, perceiving color differences, wearing personal protective equipment (beards not permitted). Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping.
