This leadership role requires a dynamic, performance-driven, and innovative individual with specialized and diverse knowledge to develop people and systems, helping us achieve our quality and safety goals. SickKids offers opportunities to showcase and develop leadership capabilities.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, this role provides senior leadership and oversight for developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies and programs to optimize patient safety, quality improvement, infection prevention and control (IPAC), and emergency preparedness (EP). The role collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to establish priorities focused on innovation, continuous improvement, service excellence, and performance acceleration.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Operational Leadership:

Lead organizational quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention and control, and emergency preparedness strategic priorities in partnership with medical leadership.

Quality Management:

  • Ensure all quality dimensions are strategic imperatives.
  • Advance patient safety through initiatives like Caring Safely.
  • Collaborate with Patient and Family Relations to incorporate patient and family experience.
  • Work with the EDI team to promote health equity.
  • Partner with Process Improvement teams to enhance quality via Lean and design thinking.
  • Set organizational priorities and goals for Quality Improvement.
  • Monitor and manage these priorities across the organization.
  • Oversee accreditation processes and compliance with quality legislation.
  • Coordinate quality and safety committees and manage policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Patient Safety Program & Serious Safety Event Reviews:

  • Define safety strategies and lead initiatives like Caring Safely.
  • Manage SSE reviews and safety reporting systems.
  • Oversee Morbidity and Mortality Committees and respond to coroner requests.
  • Collaborate externally to enhance safety priorities.

Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC):

  • Develop and evaluate IPAC strategies aligned with best practices and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with mandated programs and standards.
  • Implement surveillance, outbreak management, and evidence-based policies.
  • Collaborate with external agencies and partners.

Emergency Preparedness (EP):

  • Oversee all-hazards emergency preparedness programs.
  • Maintain relationships with community partners and systems to enhance EP.

Problem Solving and People Management:

  • Operate independently using expertise and escalate issues as needed.
  • Lead and develop teams, ensuring resource allocation and performance management.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant healthcare fields.
  • 5-7 years of leadership experience in quality and safety in a complex healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement, patient safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, financial, and project management skills.
  • Additional assets include presentation experience, research participation, external leadership roles, and understanding of AI applications.
