Job description

As the Director of Practice Efficiency and Innovation, you will enhance the firm’s approach to legal service delivery by leading the design and implementation of process optimizations, knowledge management solutions, client-facing products and thought-leadership in close collaboration with practice leaders and legal professionals. Through your proven experience in understanding practice-specific needs and workflows, you will identify opportunities and solutions to reduce inefficiencies and enhance client service delivery.

Advancing the firm’s strategy to effectively and responsibly leverage and integrate Generative AI into a legal practice is a key component of this role. As a Director, you will be championing and enabling a culture of innovation within legal teams by encouraging a mindset of continuous improvement, creativity, adoption and optimization.

You will be responsible for the strategy, operationalization, and regular review of the firm’s legal technology stack, ensuring the portfolio of technologies is fit for purpose, is well-adopted, and improves efficiency, collaboration, and legal teams’ ability to deliver value to clients. This includes continuously monitoring and staying connected in the legal technology landscape for advancements and trends.

Finally, effective collaboration and relationship-building with key stakeholders are instrumental, including partnering with practice leaders to understand and prioritize needs, and with the Professional Growth and Management team, the Technology team and the Learning and Development team on technology skill development programs and deployment strategies to foster successful technology adoption. This also includes working cross-functionally to modernize legal knowledge management practices and implement supportive resources, including best practice guides and playbooks, toolkits, checklists and model and precedent documents.

As the Director, Practice Efficiency and Innovation, you will lead a cross-functional team, including document automation and eDiscovery professionals, and foster a collaborative work environment of professional excellence and creativity. You will effectively communicate department plans and expectations, cascading goals to ensure they are in alignment with the firm's goals and priorities. In addition, you will invest in the professional development and growth of team members, providing ongoing mentoring, coaching, and continuous feedback. The role includes, overseeing the development and ongoing management of the department operating budget, assuming overall responsibility for the tracking and reporting of expenditures and budget variances.

The Director, Practice Efficiency and Innovation reports to the National Director, Innovation and Strategic Operations.

What You Bring

  • Proven effective leadership in managing, mentoring, and developing functional teams
  • LLB and minimum of three years of private practice experience
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating, implementing, and working with legal technology, including LLM / AI in a legal environment
  • Experience working with industry vendors considered an asset
  • Understanding of legal workflows and managing legal technology platforms
  • Confident in piloting, evaluating, selecting, and implementing legal technologies, including Generative AI and integration into processes
  • Experience with document automation and / or document discovery considered an asset
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines effectively
  • Manages fast-paced workloads
  • Provides exceptional level of client service
