Reporting to the Deputy Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut (TIN), the Director, Policy is accountable for developing and coordinating corporate plans, policies, and legislation in support of Tamapta and the Department’s Vision, Mission, Mandate, Goals, and Objectives. Responsibilities include research, corporate and external communications, community development, and legislation development.

The Director supports the Minister by developing policy, coordinating briefing materials, responding to Members of the Legislative Assembly, ministerial correspondence, and maintaining records of Requests for Decisions by Cabinet. The role involves collecting and analyzing information to evaluate departmental achievement, providing program planning information and evaluation, and managing communications and research.

This role advises senior management on strategic planning and policy development, analyzes trends to inform legislation, aligns departmental goals with government priorities, researches best practices, and coordinates intergovernmental agreements. The Director supports the senior Management Committee by conducting socio-economic studies, designing research methodologies, analyzing data, and presenting findings and policy options. The position manages departmental reference materials and databases, fosters intergovernmental collaboration, and streamlines information dissemination. It also involves preparing policy submissions, coordinating intergovernmental relations, advising on federal and territorial issues, managing resources, and leading public awareness efforts. The incumbent oversees two positions directly and four indirectly.

The required knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically obtained through a recognized post-secondary degree in social sciences, law, management, or business administration, plus five years of managerial experience in policy, planning, or program management. A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

The official languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Applicants may submit resumes in any of these languages. Fluency in more than one is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and experience in a northern cross-cultural environment are also assets.

Equivalent education and experience may be considered. An eligibility list may be created for future vacancies.
