Job description

GEMINI ( www.geminimedicine.ca ) is a "made-in-Ontario" data platform and Canada's largest hospital clinical data research network. We have collected data for >2.4 million admissions (constituting >20 billion datapoints) from more than 35 hospitals across Ontario, supporting research on quality of care and patient outcomes. The platform supports >1000 researchers, clinicians, and students with over 100 active projects. GEMINI has been integral to over 100 grants totaling more than $140M in funding, across more than 13 institutions. It serves as a key resource for research, quality measurement, and innovation in hospital care, including AI and advanced data analytics, and trains highly qualified personnel.

GEMINI employs approximately 40 full-time staff at Unity Health Toronto, supported by a strong executive team composed of Principal Investigators and directors overseeing data platform and expansion projects. The leadership team includes managers and research scientists.

Key stakeholders include hospital partners, Ontario Health, the Ontario Ministry of Health, the Canadian Institute for Health Information, Canada’s Drug Agency, Choosing Wisely Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, ICES, and the Vector Institute, among others, all collaborating to improve healthcare through data and research.

Duties And Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership (40% of work time)
  • Participate in GEMINI’s Executive Team to shape strategic direction.
  • Lead a team of research managers, coordinators, and assistants, overseeing HR, fostering an inclusive culture, and mentoring staff.
  • Manage governance structures, including secretariat support for GEMINI’s Multi-Institutional Steering Committee.
  • Coordinate internal activities, including executive and leadership meetings, and enhance workplace culture through social initiatives.
  • Implement risk management frameworks and monitor organizational performance.
Daily Operations (40% of work time)
  • Oversee GEMINI’s business operations, including financial management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Contribute to business development and fundraising strategies, including grant oversight.
  • Manage legal agreements with partners, with legal support as needed.
  • Handle research project administration, ethics approvals, onboarding, and reporting.
  • Support onboarding of new hospitals and data governance activities.
Stakeholder Relationships (20% of work time)
  • Lead engagement with health system stakeholders, initially focusing on Ontario Health for quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications, Knowledge And Skills
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field; PhD and MBA are assets.
  • At least 5 years in healthcare management, with 7-10 years managing large-scale projects and teams.
  • Proven operational leadership, strategic planning, and financial management skills.
  • Experience with process optimization, technology, change management, and stakeholder relations.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to foster an inclusive, innovative work environment.
  • Experience with research operations, health data, governance, and grant management is advantageous.
