A leading financial services provider seeks an Operational Risk Director for its Global Wealth & Asset Management division. This role involves supporting risk governance, managing operational risks, and collaborating with business leaders to ensure effective risk management. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in risk management within the asset management industry and possesses strong analytical and communication skills.
Global Wealth & Asset Management (GWAM) is the global asset management arm of Manulife and provides fee-based wealth solutions to retail, retirement and institutional customers around the world.
The Operational Risk Director, GWAM - Public Markets, will be responsible for supporting the Operational Risk Officer of Public Markets' mandate to design, implement, execute and monitor an effective risk governance and management program, and with overseeing operational risk mitigation activities, across Public Markets and Global Wealth and Asset Management.
Position Responsibilities:
Support activities to facilitate the effective implementation of an operational risk framework within Manulife Investment Management Public Markets. This will include the following:
Conduct Risk and Control Self-Assessments: documentation of key risks and controls and development of action plans to remediate control gaps, as needed
Contribute to the development of Key Risk Indicators to track identified risks
Collect, review and reconcile internal and external risk incidents/ loss events, ensure they are addressed timely, including root cause analysis
Contribute to the design and execution of scenario analysis for key risks
Identify emerging risks to strengthen risk oversight
Support change management; for new products, business initiatives and strategies and assess impact on the division’s risk profile
Develop close partnerships and provide value-added collaboration with business and functional leaders to ensure that key risks are properly identified, managed and mitigated
Support the development and maintenance of Global Wealth & Asset Management level Risk Appetite Statements and associated metrics
Contribute to developing a strong risk culture and work with the business to reinforce accountability and transparency across the organization
Provide support for risk aggregation and reporting
The Candidate:
We are looking for a professional who can bring expertise in the asset management industry across various public asset classes, which may include global fixed income, global equities, real estate, loans, derivatives, with knowledge of various vehicle types such as separate accounts, multi-asset funds, mutual funds and ETFs. In addition, the candidate will have significant experience in the design, implementation and/or execution of the Operational Risk Management framework for a large financial institution.
Required Qualifications:
A seasoned risk professional with a minimum 8 years of risk management, finance and/or audit experience;
Bachelor's degree is required;
Strong working knowledge of the wealth and asset management industry and related business processes, familiarity with the current regulatory environment and risks and controls facing asset managers;
Comprehensive understanding of foundational elements of an operational risk management program (Risk and Control Self Assessments, Risk Indicators, risk events, scenario analysis) in the financial services industry;
Highly developed business acumen with ability to synthesize complex information from various sources, identifying key points and issues;
A strong moral compass and a commitment to high ethical standards;
Strong collaboration and partnering skills and proven ability to develop effective working relationships with business and functional partners to influence decisions;
Strong program and project management skills and ability to independently manage multiple, conflicting priorities and deliver a quality result within tight deadlines;
Highly organized with an ability to work in a fast-paced, multi stakeholder environment and manage multiple priorities;
A highly motivated and results-oriented individual with an established track record in building effective programs and transforming strategy into action;
Solid analytical and creative problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate with others to implement new solutions;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to articulate complex technical issues.

Salary range is expected to be between
$105,750.00 CAD - $190,350.00 CADIf you are applying for this role outside of the primary location, please contact recruitment@manulife.com for the salary range for your location. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
