The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking a Director of Planning Services to drive transformative development, land use, environmental and geographic initiatives that support our city's growth and resilience. Reporting to the General Manager of Planning and Growth, you’ll lead a dynamic division responsible for development approvals, strategic planning, climate action, GIS and more.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead Strategy and Execution: Develop and deliver an annual Business Plan aligned with the City’s strategic goals.
  • Drive Innovation: Oversee planning functions including zoning, environmental initiatives, lake water quality, EarthCare and land restoration.
  • Be the Voice of Planning: Represent the City at Council, LPAT and public forums, acting as the principal planning advisor.
  • Foster Growth: Champion community development projects and secure funding for strategic initiatives.
  • Engage Stakeholders: Build strong relationships with developers, government agencies and the public to ensure collaborative planning outcomes.
  • Manage Resources: Lead a skilled team and oversee financial, human and physical resources to deliver exceptional service.
What You Bring
  • A degree in Planning or a related field, with OPPI registration.
  • 10+ years of senior-level planning experience, ideally in a municipal or unionized environment.
  • Proven experience leading strategic policy initiatives.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act, strategic planning tools and environmental policy.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation and consensus-building skills.

Salary and Additional Benefits

The range of pay for this position is $159,442.29 to $187,724.25 per annum. We also offer a comprehensive health benefits plan (100 per cent employer paid), OMERS pension plan, life insurance, an Employee Assistance Program and more.
