Position Summary : The Director of Manufacturing provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for multi-site manufacturing operations across Ontario and Quebec. This role is accountable for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective conversion of recycled plastic and rubber materials into high-quality consumer products, ensuring alignment with company objectives and performance targets.

This position drives operational excellence through the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies, and continuous improvement initiatives. A key focus is ensuring compliance with ISO 9001 : 2015 or the most current quality standards, while embedding a culture of sustainability, safety, and innovation throughout the production network.

Operating within a dynamic and evolving environment, the Director of Manufacturing balances a strong on-site presence at production facilities with strategic leadership responsibilities at the corporate level. The role requires hands-on engagement, change management expertise, and a commitment to developing high-performing teams across multiple locations.

Strategic Operational Leadership :

  • Oversee daily operations of manufacturing facilities in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Ensure production targets, quality standards, and delivery timelines are met.
  • Measure & optimize utilization and OEE of all primary production equipment.
  • Establish and enforce safety, environmental, and compliance protocols across all sites.

Strategic Planning & Execution :

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for process optimization, capacity expansion, and cost control.
  • Lead initiatives related to Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and report on KPIs such as OEE, scrap rate, downtime, throughput, and labor efficiency.

Production & Capacity Management

  • Ensure production planning processes align with demand forecasting, inventory targets, and customer delivery schedules.
  • Monitor capacity utilization, downtime, repair & maintenance spend and recommend investments in automation or new equipment as needed.
  • Oversee make-vs-buy decisions in alignment with procurement and supply chain teams.

Quality, Safety & Compliance :

  • Champion a zero-incident safety culture and ensure compliance with provincial and federal regulations (e.g., WSIB, CNESST, CEPA).
  • Oversee the development of quality assurance programs (QMS) to meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with Sales, R&D and Product Development teams to scale up new products and materials.

Budget & Cost Management

  • Lead the development of annual operating budgets for manufacturing, including labor, materials, utilities, maintenance, and capital expenditures.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities across sites without compromising safety or quality.
  • Work with FP&A team to implement “in month” financial controls and reporting.
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships for outsourced services or equipment installation.

Risk Management & Business Continuity

  • Develop and oversee contingency plans for equipment failure, supply disruptions, and labor shortages.
  • Implement business continuity practices and disaster recovery strategies across all manufacturing sites.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation plans for high-impact operational risks.

Compliance, Auditing & Certifications

  • Ensure facilities are compliant with relevant ISO standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001) and maintain certifications.
  • Lead preparation for internal and external audits, including customer audits and regulatory inspections.
  • Maintain documentation and reporting systems to support traceability, quality assurance, and EH&S compliance.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial Management or related field (MBA is an asset).
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in manufacturing; minimum 5 years at the senior management level.
  • Proven experience in plastic / rubber processing, particularly in extrusion and grinding operations.
  • Strong knowledge of recycling processes, sustainability practices, and circular manufacturing.
  • Bilingual in English and French preferred (given operations in Quebec and Ontario).
  • Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Experience managing multi-site operations and cross-functional teams.

Multi-Site Responsibilities :

  • Frequent travel between Ontario and Quebec locations (minimum 20% - 30% travel).
  • Flexibility to be on-site during audits, project launches, or production challenges.
  • Coordination with geographically dispersed teams and stakeholders.

Team Management & Development :

  • Lead and mentor a cross-functional team including Plant Managers, Production Supervisors, Maintenance, Quality, and EH&S personnel.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, performance, and employee engagement through effective communication and transparency of goals versus actual performance.
  • Collaborate with HR to ensure skills development, succession planning, and workforce training
  • Active involvement in extrusion, grinding, and compounding operations involving industrial-scale machinery.
  • Exposure to moderate levels of noise, dust, heat, and vibrations typical of heavy manufacturing.
  • Must follow and enforce all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards (e.g., PPE requirements, lockout / tagout procedures)
