Director of Health and Safety and Chief Medical Officer

Introduction

Reporting to the VP, Health and Safety and Chief Medical Officer, the Director, Health & Safety, Projects will lead and support Health and Safety at both the enterprise and project levels. This role provides overarching direction to the Projects group on all Occupational Health, Safety & Hygiene programs while advancing significant global H&S initiatives.

This position is based in Vancouver, BC or Toronto, ON , with regular travel required to various project sites, including high-altitude locations.

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhering to and sponsoring safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Champion a culture of safety leadership, ensuring safety remains a core value
  • Interpret and align project-specific H&S objectives with enterprise strategies, policies, and standards
  • Contribute to enterprise-level H&S initiatives and promote strategic alignment across all assets
  • Integrate H&S principles throughout the full project lifecycle (planning, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning)
  • Serve on the Project Leadership Team, advising senior leadership on H&S risks, trends, and mitigation strategies
  • Oversee contractor H&S performance, ensuring contractual expectations and compliance
  • Lead and mentor H&S professionals, encouraging knowledge sharing and professional growth
  • Monitor and analyze safety performance metrics to identify trends and corrective actions
  • Lead incident response and investigations, ensuring alignment with enterprise protocols
  • Conduct audits and inspections, ensuring implementation of corrective actions and shared lessons
  • Maintain alignment with Project Directors / Managers for consistent program execution and improvement
  • Deliver timely and accurate H&S reports, dashboards, and performance summaries
  • Support management alignment and visible safety leadership across the Projects group
  • Provide tools for high-level risk assessments for serious injury, illness, or fatality risks
  • Empower teams to stop or defer unsafe work when necessary

Requirements

  • Degree in Health, Safety, Environmental Sciences or a related field
  • 15+ years of site safety experience, including 10+ years in construction projects with progressive leadership roles
  • Experience on Owners teams and working with EPCM contractors to develop integrated H&S programs
  • Proven leadership in enterprise-level H&S initiatives across diverse geographic and cultural settings
  • Strong understanding of H&S management systems, risk assessments, critical controls, and compliance
  • Ability to identify and manage risks across varying climates, terrains, and project phases
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver safety improvements through collaborative leadership
  • Spanish language skills and experience in Canada, US, Chile, Peru, and Mexico are strong assets
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 30%, including to high-altitude sites
  • Demonstrated capabilities in :

  • Designing and implementing occupational health & hygiene programs
  • Conducting audits and peer reviews targeting high-risk activities
  • Analyzing incidents using recognized methodologies (e.g., ICAM)
  • Developing and reporting on H&S performance indicators
  • Communicating best practices and lessons learned to support continuous improvement
