Job description

Our client is a small, entrepreneurial single-family office that manages a diverse portfolio of operating businesses, each with substantial and growing financial activity, requiring both strategic insight and day-to-day execution. They are seeking a competent and resourceful Director of Finance to join the team in a role that demands that they think like a CFO and work like a Controller - equally comfortable in the weeds and at the whiteboard.

This is not a purely oversight or managerial role. The successful candidate will be directly responsible for a wide range of financial and operational tasks, including preparing and booking journal entries, liaising with external advisors on complex tax matters, and navigating regulatory filings and compliance across multiple domains.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full-cycle accounting and financial reporting, including journal entries, reconciliations, and periodic closings for multiple entities.
  • Coordinate tax preparation with external advisors, including preparing necessary information packages, ensuring accuracy and completeness of records, and tracking deliverables.
  • Regulatory compliance and filing, including:
  • HST returns
  • Coordinating with commercial and fleet insurance providers and preparing all necessary materials
  • Liquor license renewals
  • Gaming licenses and compliance
  • Occupational health and safety filings
  • Ontario Federation of Agriculture and other regulatory bodies, as required
  • Cash flow management, including forecasting, fund transfers, and reporting on liquidity.
  • Liaise with legal, accounting, and operational advisors to support broader planning, structuring, and due diligence activities.
  • Maintain and improve internal systems for tracking financial and operational performance.
  • Support the Principal in evaluating business opportunities and risks through critical thinking, financial modelling, and strategic insight.
  • Contribute to HR, benefits administration, and other operational matters as required.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • CPA designation (or equivalent experience); strong accounting skills.
  • Prior experience in a family office, holding company, or entrepreneurial environment is an asset.
  • Comfortable operating independently in a small team with targeted support.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities across tax, compliance, and operations.
  • Strong attention to detail and accountability for execution — you are just as comfortable doing the work as you are planning it.
  • High degree of discretion and professionalism in handling confidential information.
