Job summary

The Burnaby School District invites applications for the Director of Finance. This on-site leadership role reports to the Assistant Secretary Treasurer and oversees financial services, purchasing, and audit functions across the district.

Ideal candidates will have a CPA designation, a post-secondary business credential, at least 10 years in accounting or finance with 5 years supervisory experience, and strong ERP, data analysis and reporting skills.

The Burnaby School District is located on the traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ. Burnaby is at the geographical centre of Metro Vancouver. In 2021, Burnaby had a population of 249,125. The city is culturally diverse, with roughly 54% of residents having a primary language other than English or French.

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

We're the fourth largest school district in BC, operating 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, as well as a range of District programs and Provincial Resource Programs. Over 27,000 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 are enrolled. Position Description

Reporting to the Assistant Secretary Treasurer, the Director of Finance functions as part of the Finance Department. The Director of Finance is responsible for providing leadership and oversight in the areas of district and school accounting, purchasing, financial controls and audit, financial reporting, and other assigned financial functions, while working collaboratively with other Finance functions across the District.

Position Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and direct oversight to the Financial Services and Purchasing functions, and to other Finance functions as assigned.
• Works collaboratively with Finance leadership and staff across budget, payroll, capital accounting and other financial functions to support effective financial management across the District.
• Provides support to the Assistant Secretary-Treasurer in the preparation of the District's annual budget, financial planning, and other financial reports required by Senior Management and the Board
• Ensures the efficient and effective operation of assigned Finance functions while maintaining a high level of service to schools, staff and the District
• Ensures appropriate internal controls, practices and processes are maintained and where required upgraded to ensure compliance to policy, accuracy, timeliness and reliability of financial information
• Manages and oversees the internal and external audit functions and ensure compliance to public sector accounting standards, Ministry of Education guidelines and district policies
• Ensures effective and efficient procurement practices are complied with in accordance with Board policies
• Provides leadership, mentoring and coaching to assist Finance staff with skill and leadership development
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a Post-Secondary business program
• Chartered Professional Accountant designation (CPA)
• 10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance with at least 5 years of supervisory experience, preferably within a large public sector organization
• Knowledge and experience of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) financial systems, data analysis and reporting tools
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate, build effective teams and communicate effectively at all levels

What We Offer

Director of Finance compensation is determined by BC Public Service Employer Association. The salary for this position is $121,992 - $152,489 along with a comprehensive benefits package including pension. Further details will be discussed at the time of hire.
