Job description

Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Community Development is responsible for the complete leadership, management, direction and operation of the Community Development Department; consisting of Planning, Building, By-law, and Economic Development.

As a key senior leader and team player in the organization, the Director develops and recommends policies and long-range strategies to effectively and efficiently guide growth and development in the City.As well as, undertake strategic and/or highly complex projects and studies to support Council initiatives, the City’s Strategic Plan, and other senior staff in the organization.

An experienced municipal planner with exceptional communication skills and a solid understanding of moving development forward in a changing planning environment, the Director oversees all economic development initiatives, planning applications and building permits. This includes ensuring streamlined processes are implemented while providing excellent customer service.

The ideal candidate will be a team player with strong academic credentials and relevant post secondary education combined with extensive managerial experience such as:

  • Completion of a relevant university degree in Planning, Urban Studies, or a related field, with at least 8 years progressively responsible experience in the planning and development field working formunicipalities or the development industry.
  • A minimum of 3 years of management/leadership experience in a municipal or development industry environment with highly developed communication and public relations skills; strong presentation and writing skills; and the ability to effectively communicate municipal priorities and interests.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents, community leaders, business owners, and government agencies.
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) and a member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and a Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP).
  • Valid Class “G” Ontario driver’s license in good standing.
