DIRECTOR, COMMUNICATIONS

SCOPE OF POSITION :

The Director, Communications is accountable for the creation and implementation of a strategic, multi-faceted communications program designed to build on and strengthen the Society’s role and reputation as a leader in its field. Skilled in change management and strategic communications, the Director supports the evolution of the membership structure, internally and with the broader membership. The Director oversees the coordination, quality control and delivery of publications and video presentation of educational materials, devises guidelines and policies, and provides quality control for communications programs, social media, and other media activities.

The Director is also responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the communications team which includes a Communications Specialist, Education Specialist, and Communications and Education Coordinator.

As a member of the CNPS senior leadership team, the Director, Communications collaborates with colleagues across disciplines to shape the direction and growth of the organization, oversees internal communications and liaises with stakeholders on a range of matters relating to the provision of CNPS services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Develops the strategic communications plan to support the organization's mission, goals and objectives.
  • Builds relationships and key partnerships with professional counterparts in related organizations and CNPS member organizations through strategic stakeholder engagement and initiatives.
  • Partners with other departments within the Society to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives.
  • Ensures alignment and consistency with communications strategies and ongoing initiatives.
  • Administers the planning and timely delivery of all external communications activities, including establishing production timetables, review of registration materials, reviewing educational materials, and overseeing the distribution of materials.
  • Oversees the review, production and distribution of all communications materials including releases, online content, monthly newsletters, registration guidance and other various educational materials.
  • Directs the coordination of any CNPS presence at special events including conferences, press events, etc.
  • Identifies opportunities to support and promote organizational initiatives by leading the development and rollout of communications programs and materials that create an awareness of activities both internally and externally.
  • Develops, implements, and updates news media, public relations and corporate communications policies and guidelines.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations of recurring and new communications initiatives and campaigns.
  • Prepares monthly summary progress reports of ongoing activities and new initiatives.
  • Assists CEO in responding to public requests for information from member organizations, government agencies, businesses, advocacy groups, media, and other associations; facilitates media interviews where required.
  • Leads the hiring, training, coaching, and performance assessment of team members by providing constructive feedback and professional development opportunities in accordance with company policy; consults with Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Ensures adherence to company policies and processes, including compliance with privacy laws and regulations.
  • Participates in the development of the annual budget.

REQUIREMENTS :

  • University or college degree in communications-related field or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience in a similar role.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience in a senior leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated project management, risk management, and financial management experience
  • Proficiency with SharePoint and Microsoft Office Suite / 0365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency with social media platforms and analytics (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).
  • Ability and willingness to commute / relocate to Ottawa.

DESIRABLE :

  • Fluency in both official languages, written and oral.
  • Thorough understanding of the changing dynamics of the health care sector and knowledge of medico-legal terminology, healthcare and regulated health professional concepts.
  • Experience with WordPress.
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Experience with crisis communications.
  • Experience using databases or customer management systems (i.e. : Salesforce).
