Qualifications

  • Established network in Canadian defence/maritime circles.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian federal procurement processes.
  • Track record of winning high-value contracts or partnerships.
  • Excellent relationship-building, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Eligible for Canadian government security clearance.
  • Willingness to travel domestically (and occasionally internationally).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a business development strategy across Canadian maritime and defence markets.
  • Identify, qualify, and pursue opportunities with federal departments, primes, and commercial partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry stakeholders.
  • Lead or support proposal development, capture strategy, and bid/no-bid decisions.
  • Track procurement pipelines (CanadaBuys, MERX) and policy shifts relevant to defence and maritime spending.
  • Represent the company at industry events and conferences.
  • Collaborate with technical, program, and executive teams to shape value propositions.
  • Provide regular pipeline reporting and forecasting to leadership.
  • Work with Customer Support, Product Management, and internal teams to ensure delivery.
  • Develop hiring plan for growth of the BD/sales team.

Job Description:

Our client in the maritime & defence industry is currently seeking a Director - Business Development for a full-time permanent position.

As the successful candidate you will lead the identification, pursuit, and capture of new business opportunities across Canada's maritime and broader defence markets. This is a high-impact, hands-on client-facing role for someone who understands Canadian defence procurement, has an existing network within the sector, and can translate relationships into revenue.

This position is flexible and available to canadidates across Canada who are open and willing to travel regularly for the role. The clients office is in Halifax, NS and will prioritize local candidates that can adhere to a hybrid model and be in-office 1-2 days a week. The successful candidate must be located in Canada, or willing to relocate.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute a business development strategy to grow the company's presence across Canadian maritime and defence markets
  • Identify, qualify, and pursue new opportunities within federal government departments, primes, and other commercial partners
  • Build and maintain relationships with key industry stakeholders
  • Lead or support proposal development, capture strategy, and bid/no-bid decisions
  • Track procurement pipelines (e.g., CanadaBuys, MERX) and emerging policy/program shifts relevant to defence and maritime spending
  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and association meetings (e.g., CADSI, shipbuilding/marine industry forums)
  • Collaborate with technical, program, and executive teams to shape competitive value propositions
  • Provide regular pipeline reporting and forecasting to leadership
  • Work closely with Customer Support, Product Management, and other internal teams to ensure seamless delivery.
  • Develop hiring plan for growth of the business development and sales team
Required skills:
  • 8+ years of business development, capture, and/or sales experience in maritime, aerospace, defence, or related industries
  • Demonstrated network within Canadian defence/maritime industry circles
  • Strong understanding of Canadian federal procurement processes and frameworks
  • Proven track record of winning new contracts or partnerships of significant value
  • Excellent relationship-building, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Eligible for Canadian government security clearance
  • Willingness to travel domestically (and occasionally internationally) as required
Nice-to-have skills:
  • Proven deep experience with shipbuilding, marine systems, and defence
  • Familiarity with the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) or similar federal programs
  • Prior experience at a prime contractor, systems integrator, or Tier 1/2 supplier
