Job description

The Director of AI Model Risk Management is a key risk governance advisor and cross-functional risk coordinator at Manulife, leading AI adoption initiatives. As part of the Group Model Risk Management (MRM) team, you will advise global stakeholders to ensure the safe, secure, and efficient integration of AI technologies/models. This role is vital for accelerating AI adoption, improving operational efficiency, and reducing compliance costs across the organization. You will collaborate with Model Risk Management teams to develop advanced AI governance frameworks and validation techniques, leveraging artificial intelligence. Reporting to the AVP, Model Risk Management, this position is based at the Toronto Head Office.

By establishing a responsible AI governance framework and coordinating risk assessments, you will ensure robust AI model risk management. Incorporating GenAI in governance and validation processes will help revolutionize MRM operations. This role directly impacts Manulife's ability to capitalize on AI opportunities, supporting strategic goals.

Primary Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and implement an AI Model Risk Management (MRM) policy in collaboration with the Advanced Analytics Model Validation and Governance team (AAMVG) and global stakeholders.
  2. Coordinate risk assessments with global stakeholders and participate in AI model risk evaluations.
  3. Establish or support a responsible AI governance framework to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
  4. Facilitate AI/GenAI enablement for model validation, research, and compliance training.
  5. Develop AI-based training programs, including static audio/video content for company-wide model risk compliance education.
  6. Serve as a senior advisor on AI model risk governance, providing insights and recommendations to leadership.
  7. Promote GenAI adoption in model risk governance and validation processes.
Required Qualifications:
  • Postgraduate degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in model risk management, focusing on AI/ML models.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor and influence risk professionals.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements related to model risk and AI/ML.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Experience with programming languages and tools such as Python, R, TensorFlow, or similar.
  • Knowledge of corporate governance, legal, risk, and compliance aspects is advantageous.
